Job overview
The post holder will play a key role in the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) & in the delivery of acute oncology services throughout the Trust. The post holder will provide early input of specialist care to oncology patients enabling
- Faster and better care of patients with complications of chemotherapy (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge)
- Faster and better care of patients with complications of cancer (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to specialist oncology team, palliative care team etc)
- Appropriate investigation of patients who might benefit from treatment for unknown primary cancers (targeted investigations, rapid triage of patients into specialist oncology or palliative care).
The post holder will give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills and experience. The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in Oncology, Palliative care, ED, Acute Medicine, Surgical, Radiology and Pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include the development of clinical guidelines & education programmes.
The post holder will carry responsibility for either a defined case load or offering “highly specialist service advice” this will include setting standards of care, the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the Multi-Professional team, patients and carers within their Speciality Service

Triage and perform specialist assessment of patients nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery using advanced clinical knowledge and clinical skills. Contribute towards a multi-professional approach in the management of patients within the specialist area, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements. Support patients and their families and ensure that they receive the required information to enable them to self-manage, lead or participate in their care delivery Recognise changes in patient’s condition that require the intervention of others and highlight this as part of the supportive Advisory and Liaison role the AO Team provides. |
Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services.
Monitor investigation results, initiating further assessment/review of treatment pathway as required.
Contribute to the health promotion agenda with the local health economy.
Provide specialist expert clinical advice and guidance to clinical colleagues.
Undertake clinical supervision on an individual or group basis. Act as the patients advocate and ambassador

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Identify need for, participate and undertake, research, clinical audit, benchmarking and equipment trials, in order to improve effectiveness of patient care.
- Disseminate research and audit findings through presentation to professional groups and publication.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
- Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area, leading to service improvement.
- Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights.
- Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
- Disseminate good practice and knowledge by pursuing opportunities to present work at national conferences or via publication, encourage team members likewise.
- Identify clinical issues and incidents within the Trust that reduce the quality of care within the specialist service brining any issues to the attention of the Line manager and appropriate governance structure.
- Take part in activities to counter these to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care.
- Evaluate service delivery against Key Performance Indicators, locally, regionally and nationally within the Acute Oncology Service.
- Identify learning needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of education to meet identified need.
Participate in the education of pre and post registered nurses, medical staff, AHP’s, patient and carers and participate in curriculum development where appropriate.
Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and NMC regulations and requirements

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration
- Required Nursing Degree
- Relevant Oncology Experience
Desirable criteria
- Masters Level Education or willingness to study on relevant pathway
- Clinical Examination Module either Level 6 or Level 7
- Clinical Diagnostic Module Either level 6 or Level 7
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience as Band 6 and experience in speciality or cancer related area.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience of collaborative working and service development.
- Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of professional requirements and issues.
- Knowledge of regional and national policies related to Acute Oncology
