Job overview

The Locum Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology will be responsible for the following key tasks:

Specialist Clinical Care Delivery:

Provide consultant-led outpatient care as well as take part in the ward and oncall rota in diabetes and endocrinology, including:

Complex diabetes management

Insulin ump initiation and follow-up clinics

Thyroid and general endocrine disorders

Weight management (Tier 3) services

Contribute to the delivery of inpatient endocrine and diabetes care, including advice, ward reviews, and in-reach to other specialties.

Oversight of Technology-Enabled Diabetes Services:

Lead and support the insulin pump service, including structured education, patient selection, initiation, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

 Contribute to service improvement aligned with NICE guidelines on hybrid closed-loop systems and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

Management of RTT and Follow-Up Backlogs:

Support the recovery of RTT performance (currently 85.19% for diabetes and 42.94% for endocrine) through high-volume outpatient activity and validation of overdue follow-ups (currently 5,368).

Work collaboratively with the operational team to streamline pathways and manage outpatient demand effectively.

Main duties of the job

s      Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Leadership:

Participate in and chair multidisciplinary team meetings in diabetes (e.g. foot MDTs, technology MDTs) and endocrinology (e.g. thyroid, pituitary, adrenal MDTs).

Provide specialist supervision to junior doctors, diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs), dietitians, and other AHPs.

Education and Training:

Supervise and support the development of medical trainees (core medical trainees, IMTs, and registrars), including workplace-based assessments and teaching.

Contribute to departmental CPD and quality improvement initiatives.

Governance and Service Development:

Engage in clinical audit, risk management, and incident review.

Support the delivery of pathways for endocrinology and diabetes, especially in response to CORE20PLUS5 health inequalities priorities and national GIRFT recommendations.

Provides essential capacity and specialist knowledge to maintain the insulin pump service and avoid unsafe delays in T1DM care.

Reduces pressure on the outpatient backlog, helping to address the 5,368 overdue follow-ups

Supports achievement of RTT targets and Operational Planning Guidance for 2025/26.

Enables continuity of endocrine input to weight management, aligning with CORE20PLUS5 to tackle health inequalities in deprived cohorts.

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or MBBS (or equivalent), MRCP (UK)
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise (or eligible for)
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Higher degree (MD or PhD)

Knowledge & Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • High clinical standard for independent Consultant practice
Desirable criteria
  • Subspecialty interest in diabetes or related areas
  • Post CCT fellowship in diabetes & endocrinology

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience teaching medical, nursing, and allied health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • PGCE or evidence of education delivery
  • Train the Trainer qualification Experience of UG & PG teaching

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of NHS management structures and the principles of Clinical Governance. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Management & Managing Others

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to participate in management activities, understanding of management and the specific management issues within an NHS Foundation Trust. Demonstrates ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team with the ability to lead and manage conflict
