Job overview

This is a full time NHS vacancy for a Specialist Registrar for a fixed term period of 8 months.  Principal duties will be from January 2026 in the Diabetes Centre at University Hospital Aintree.

This post would suit an individual with previous Diabetes & Endocrinology medicine knowledge or experience or interested in gaining further experience managing a diverse range of patients within our specialised clinics.  In addition, the applicant would also take part in the care of general medical patients, both on the wards and as part of the acute medical take and previous experience being on call at IMT3 level or above in an NHS trust or equivalent is essential.

The successful applicant will work under Consultant supervision at a level best matched to their learning needs and experience. The successful applicant will become part of a dynamic team passionate about delivering the best patient care. There are many opportunities to be involved with teaching, clinical governance, research and quality improvement to strengthen.

We also offer the opportunity for audit, publications, taking part in education meetings and supervising other resident doctors.

This post is whole time and is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service. There will be time allocated for study leave and other educational activities. This post is not part of Mersey Deanery rotation and is a speciality funded role.

Main duties of the job

The post is appointed initially for eight months. The successful applicant will work an EWTD compliant full shift rota. Salary will be dependent on experience and subject to additional allowances dependent on rota intensity. 4 outpatient specialist clinics per week with ward round support on any of the three Diabetes and Endocrinology wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Diabetes & Endocrinology Department at UHA is a purpose-built centre undertaking a range of outpatient speciality clinics along with weight management and a podiatry service. The department has three ward areas, ward 20,21 and 25 all providing inpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology care.

 The department provides a full range of secondary care diabetes and endocrine services but also a number of tertiary services including a pituitary service and weight management service.

The Diabetes and Endocrinology team also plays a role in the trust ‘Medical emergency team (MET team)’ which has made a major beneficial impact on outcomes in the trust.

 The unit has monthly Clinical Governance meetings, and audit meetings in which trainees are encouraged to participate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration with General Medical Council
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Certificate of Advance Life Support (or other accredited life support course)
  • Primary FRCA/MRCP or other higher qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • Applicants should have sufficient post-registration experience in the UK
  • 3 months experience in ICM (can be within core training program)
  • 24 months core anaesthesia training (or equivalent) by the time of starting post
  • 6 months experience in acute medicine/emergency medicine at IMT3 level or above
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in audit / quality improvement work / research
  • Involvement in teaching

Knowledge
