Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology
YC72
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Diabetes and Endocrinology department at Aintree Hospital.
The role is for 12 months as a fixed term contract and will be supporting the delivery of patient care across our three inpatient wards along with outpatient clinic delivery in our purpose built centre.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Directorate at Aintree University Hospital provides comprehensive care to a local population of approximately 330,000 residents. Owing to the specialist expertise of the consultant team, the service also receives referrals from a broader catchment area, including the North West of England and North Wales. In addition to managing a wide spectrum of diabetes cases, the consultant team delivers essential services in endocrinology, weight management, and maintains a substantial commitment to general internal medicine.
The directorate maintains strong academic and research links, particularly with the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, which supports ongoing research into diabetes and obesity. A dedicated clinical base is located at Aintree under the leadership of Professor John Wilding, Professor of Medicine. The Clinical Sciences Centre hosts well equipped clinical physiology laboratories suited for a wide range of metabolic and vascular studies in obesity and diabetes, alongside molecular and tissue culture laboratories for translational research.
Main duties of the job
The appointee, alongside their colleagues, will contribute to the delivery of general medical services, as well as specialist services in diabetes, endocrinology, and weight management. The fixed clinical sessions will include at least one weekly diabetes clinic (hospital or community), weekly endocrine clinics, weight management or bariatric clinics, and specialist clinics based on service requirements. There will also be community diabetes clinic weeks. These sessions will be agreed upon with the postholder after appointment, ensuring alignment with both their specialist interests and the service’s needs.
The role is a 9.5 – 10.5 PA job plan. During periods of ward cover, the appointee will participate in the general medical on-call rota, as well as the specialty rota.
The job plan includes core SPA to allow time for audit, mortality reviews, appraisal, and revalidation activities. An additional 0.5 SPA may be allocated within the job plan for a specific departmental role.
Extra DCC PAs may be available upon mutual agreement to meet the needs of the department or organisation.
Teaching and supervision of trainees will be an essential aspect of the role. The appointee will receive Level 2 training to become an Educational/Clinical Supervisor, provided they have not already completed this training.
The three academic consultants work alongside the NHS consultants within this department and offer the opportunity to be involved in clinical research and research trials.
