Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint 1 Fellow to the Directorate of ENT available from 06/08/26. University Hospital Aintree is the Main Tertiary Referral Hospital for head & neck malignancy in Liverpool, Merseyside and Cheshire and provides high-volume clinical experience and mentored research opportunities in ablative head and neck/thyroid surgery.

 The post is aimed at candidates approaching the end of their higher surgical training, ideally with the FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent, or post CCT. The year will be characterised by a progressive balance of mentorship and autonomy, aiming to extend the candidate’s surgical and clinical management competency to that of a safe independent practitioner working within a head and neck multi-disciplinary team.

 The person appointed will work at the Aintree Hospital site and will be a member of the ENT Directorate.  On call commitments are a 1:9 prospective night cover and a daytime ‘hot-reg’ cover on a 1:9 rolling week rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of modern surgical head & neck oncology including transoral surgery, traditional open ablative surgery &benign & malignant thyroid/parathyroid disease.

The successful candidate will prepare & present patients in the MDT along with being involved with data collection, population of dedicated oncology/thyroid databases & publishing on the clinical outcomes of the unit.

Our researchers are recognised national & international leaders in head & neck cancer, including immunotherapy (Professor Ottensmeier), HPV positive oropharynx cancer (Prof Jones), oral cancer (Prof Shaw) & survivorship, including health related quality of life (Prof Rogers) & speech &language therapy (Prof Patterson).  LHNC boasts a comprehensive portfolio of early & late-phase clinical trials & is the leading recruiter to NIHR head & neck studies with over 5000 patients recruited since 2006.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

During the clinical year, the Fellow’s primary responsibilities are in the field of patient care, including both in- and out-patient settings. The Fellow has primary responsibility to lead the junior clinical team for ward, teaching and referral queries related to head and neck cancer patients.

Surgical responsibility during the year will be tailored on a personalised basis depending on the candidate’s progress, with progressively increasing responsibility in major cases. Teaching of registrars will be an important component of the Fellowship, in preparation for assuming a future Consultant position.
