Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, wish to appoint four consultants into a newly developed Emergency General Surgery service with an interest in subspecialty working with the following specialities: one post in benign UGI, one post in benign colorectal diseases and two posts in benign HPB surgery. These are exciting new hybrid posts to support established pancreatobiliary/oesophagogastric/colorectal teams and support emergency surgical care as part of a larger general surgical team. It is expected that the successful candidate will be part of general surgery on-call rota at the Royal site. We are looking for a keen, dynamic Consultant willing to integrate with existing subspecialty teams of 22 surgeons who provide Emergency general surgery and specialist on call for the South of the city to deliver a first-class service. The post holder will help meet waiting list targets for general surgical procedures and help shape the evolving emergency surgery (EGS) model.

The merger of LUHFT has brought high volume specialist surgery to the Royal site; the emergency and general surgical requirements need a dedicated individual to help organise and achieve the 18-week targets. The separation of emergency general surgery oncalls from the specialty oncalls has opened opportunities for an EGS devoted individual to shape the service including the newly developed and resourced ambulatory service. This includes managing and contributing to the ‘hot’ ambulatory lists including the gallbladder service as appropriate.

It is a full-time post consisting of 10 PAs, of which 1.5 are dedicated SPA time. The job plan and SPA entitlement will be formally reviewed after 6 months and adjusted as necessary. The new appointee is expected to have main elective and emergency work at the Royal Liverpool site and possibly at Broadgreen or Aintree University Hospital, but also support cover for Emergency general surgery for the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Liverpool Womens Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as part of the wider Liverpool University Hospitals Group. The post will cover daytime emergency surgery oncall (8am-5pm) on a 1:4 basis with 1:8 on call for general surgery out of hours and weekends. The remaining weekdays will provide elective care focussed on benign subspecialty surgery including clinics and elective operating. This will be supported by attendance at appropriate MDTs and close working with the subspecialty surgical teams. The post holder will also be responsible for Undergraduate education and educational supervision of medical students attached to the subspecialty teams.

The Trust is committed to innovative and technical developments within surgery, and this is demonstrated within the services we deliver and the expansion in robotic surgery.

 Applicants must have full GMC registration, entry on the Specialist Register for General Surgery via CCT or CESR (CP) or European Community Rights- proposed CCT/CESR(CP) date must be within 6 months of interview. They should be able to provide evidence of high standards achieved in technical operating, especially in Biliary Surgery.
