Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Radiology Nurse who can demonstrate good leadership and clinical skills to join our friendly team.

These posts will initially be based on the Royal site.  There may be the requirement for cross site rotation to Aintree in the future.

You will undertake and oversee the assessment, development, implementation, evaluation and delivery of nursing care for a wide variety of patient’s in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.

You will  expected to lead a nursing team setting a professional example whilst providing a high standard of patient care at all times. The post holders will regularly take overall charge of the Intervention Radiology unit in the absence of the Lead nurse, driving forward evidence based practice and ensuring that the team provides optimum care efficiently, effectively and safely.

The post holders will require IR experience or evidence of leadership and will be responsible for their own professional development, using in service training to gain further skills and knowledge. You will be responsible for many aspects of staff management to include staff development, assessment of competence and compliance with all HR policies and guidelines.

This is a full time role and hours will be worked between 08:00-17:00 hrs Monday to Friday- flexibility within these hours will be required as will a commitment to the On Call rota.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Interventional Lead Nurse in the running of the IR unit by participating in the following:

  • To co-ordinate the shift by dealing with queries and to prioritise patient care whilst working collaboratively with other specialities.
  • To prepare patients prior to their procedure by participating within a liaison role.
  • To participate within the IR theatres to ensure a safe and effective running of the service this includes the scrub practitioner, the administration of conscious sedation and monitoring the patient’s condition and vital signs.
  • To support junior members of staff in and out of working hours
  • To provide mentorship for all Allied Health professionals, students and newly qualified nurses
  • To appraise junior staff and help and support with their development
  • To promote an effective working environment by collaborating with Radiographers and Radiologists
  • To be involved in audit to promote best practice
  • Observe the Ionising Radiations Regulations 17 and the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 and the Local rules

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

CLINICAL

1. Under the direction of the senior nurse to provide high quality evidence based care for patients requiring interventional procedures.

2. To provide continuity of care through consultation with ward staff, the patient and /or carers and other health care professionals ensuring the patient s needs are met.

3. To provide both written and oral information for patients regarding their treatment plan as required.

4. Collect, collate and report information and maintain accurate patient records.

5. Include the patient in the planning and delivery of care through pre-assessment.

6. To be knowledgeable of all the procedures, specialist equipment, drugs used and aftercare.

7. To provide specialist knowledge and advise to patients, carers ward staff and other health care professionals

8. To participate in the on call rota

9. Establish effective communication with patients, relatives and other health care professionals.

10. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.

11. To admit and discharge day-case patients ensuring patient have relevant advise and after care information.

12. To have read and comply with IR(ME)R 2000

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

1. To work with all staff to ensure the smooth running of theatres and to take charge (in collaboration with the other disciplines) in the absence of senior colleagues or when requested to do so by the senior nurse.

2. Contribute to the orientation of new staff members using a structured programme and in collaboration with the senior staff

3. Co-ordinate the day to day running of theatres and organise the nursing care for the health care team.

4. Supervise junior staff and contribute to their education and development.

5. Contribute to the development of services.

6. Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.

7. Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others.

  • ENB998 / equivalent

Experience

  • Demonstrable post reg. experience in acute settings
  • Demonstrable experience / Successful completion of preceptorship training in interventional theatres
