The trust has a supra-regional Upper GI Surgical service is one of the largest Oesophago-gastric cancer units in the country. We also provide cover for complex Oesophago-gastric trauma and emergencies. The Unit includes five Consultant Surgeons and undertakes more than 200 complex Oesophago-gastric procedures annually. We cover a population of over 1.5 million in the Northwest of England, and the Isle of Man, and receive quaternary referrals from North Wales

Main duties of the job

This post is to support the centralised Upper GI surgical service at RLUH as well as contribute to elective General Surgery, including Day Case Surgery, on the BGH site. The post holder will get exposure to major Oesophago-gastric resections for malignant disease as well as complex benign foregut cases and emergency surgery.

In addition, a minimally invasive Robotic programme is being established, and two consultants are undertaking benign, and cancer work robotically as well as laparoscopically. We work within a JAG accredited endoscopy unit; training or service can be provided to the candidate depending on level of experience. It will be encouraged that the appointed fellow develops advanced skills in endoscopy as opportunities are fantastic.

The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the unit’s clinical work including clinics, operating sessions, Multi-Disciplinary Meetings and ward rounds. The successful candidate will also have to contribute to the emergency general surgical workload of the team. The post would be ideally suited to a senior fellow looking to gain specialist Upper GI surgery experience along with emergency surgery to consolidate their experience before taking up a consultant post.
