Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Urology at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the unit’s clinical work including clinics, operating sessions, Multi-Disciplinary Meetings and ward rounds. The successful candidate will also have to contribute to the emergency surgical workload of the team.
This post would be ideally suited or a candidate who wishes to gain more experience in Urology prior to taking up Higher Specialty training or for one who is pursuing the alternate portfolio pathway for entry to specialist register.

Main duties of the job
Patient Care:
· Primary charge of all patients admitted to the service.
· Day-to-day care of patients, including outpatient clinics and provide inpatient care of urology patients including assessment of acutely ill patients.
· Supervise Core and Foundation trainees including guiding in writing admission notes, continuation notes, discharge summaries, and other associated letters as well as prescribe medications and diets for patients.
Clinical Activities:
· Observe and assist in theatre as directed by the consultant.
· Liaise closely with multi-disciplinary teams involved in patient care.
· Attend and support weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.
· Participate in audit and research projects.
Teaching and Education:
· Teach other staff, undergraduate, and postgraduate students.
· Participate in the fortnightly registrar teaching programme aimed at management of common urological conditions as well as towards the final FRCS exams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Post Key Responsibilities
Patient Care:

Work Week
The post-holder will be expected to take on duties and commitments at the level of a junior registrar. A typical work week would involve 2 clinics, 2 diagnostic sessions (flexible cystoscopy / prostate biopsy), 2 theatre sessions, 1 SPA, 1 Admin and 2 flexible sessions as per departmental requirements / individual needs
On call commitments:
There is an expectation that the successful applicant will partake in a 1:9 on-call cover at middle-grade level with prospective cover and leave cover. This is based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, but providing urology cover to other hospital sites. The middle grade rota is EWTD compliant and provides 24-hour cover. Currently this is 1 in 9 but may be subject to change depending on staffing levels.
Professional Performance
The appointee will have continuing responsibility for the proper function of the work. It is a requirement that if the employee has concerns about the professional performance of a member of the medical staff, they have a duty to speak to the person concerned. If the matter is potentially serious, or satisfaction is not obtained with the direct approach, such concerns should be discussed with the Clinical Director, if satisfaction is again not obtained, concerns should be discussed with the Associate Medical Director.
Infection Control
All medical and dental staff have a duty to practice safe medicine in relation to infection control and other issues. Appointees will therefore be expected to attend infection control learning opportunities once per year as a minimum, and to follow Trust Infection Control policies and guidelines.
Leave
Annual and study leave will be granted to the maximum extent allowable by the Medical & Dental Whitley Council regulations, but, in accordance with the Trust's leave policy.
Each Resident Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the Consultants.
Emergency and On-Call responsibilities
The doctor accepts that he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and Residents. It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while Residents accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under the sub-section is exceptional and that Residents should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
Main Conditions of Service
The appointment is subject to the Trust terms and Conditions of Service and those of the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Whitley Council conditions of Service as amended from time to time.
Research Governance
All research undertaken must comply with Trust policy on Research & Development. Trust policy and guidelines are available on the Trust’s Intranet site and specific compliance with the Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care.
Access To Children and Vulnerable Adults
The person appointed to this post may have substantial access to children and to vulnerable adults. Applicants are, therefore, advised that if your appointment is recommended and in line with Trust policy, you will be asked to undertake a disclosure check and a POCA (Protection of Children) list check with the CRB prior to commencement of employment. Refusal to do so could prevent further consideration of the application. Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Has MRCS (Urology) or equivalent
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to manage a urological emergency
- Experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a Urological disorders
- Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
Desirable criteria
- Minimum of 6 months’ experience in Urology at middle grade level.
- Ability to perform flexible cystoscopy, Trans perennial prostate biopsy
Management & Administrative
Essential criteria
- Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others
- Willingness to support the efficient and smooth running of the specialist service
Desirable criteria
- Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines
- Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainees and other doctors
Teaching & Training
Essential criteria
- Commitment to continuing medical education
- Competent in basic IT skills Clinical and sub-speciality education and training
- Experience of supervising foundation year trainees or equivalent
- Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures and techniques to other healthcare professionals
Desirable criteria
- Ability to organise and participate in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Formal qualification in medical training
Research, Audit & Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Ability to undertake complete audit cycle
- Understanding of the clinical governance process
- Interest and awareness of research methodology
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience in clinical research and ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
