Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our maternity service for a Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Midwife. You will be working as part of the Diabetes in Pregnancy multi-disciplinary team.
You will work clinically as a Diabetes Midwife, providing and prescribing care for diabetic/high risk women through the Consultant units at Liverpool Women's Hospital in liaison with the multidisciplinary teams and in conjunction with the Band 7 Diabetes Lead Midwife.
Main duties of the job
As a Band 6 Diabetes Midwife, you will provide high quality, safe midwifery care to women and their families whose pregnancy is complicated by Diabetes.
You will have an interest in the care of women with Diabetes in pregnancy and keen to develop a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which you will use to manage, develop and lead care for pregnant women and new mothers with additional needs.
The post holder will provide direct client care and be responsible for providing extra support and care to women whose pregnancy is complicated by Diabetes in partnership with the named Diabetes Specialist Lead Midwife, and the Diabetes in Pregnancy multi-disciplinary team and external agencies.
You will work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs, providing a link between the maternity service and other services involved in diabetes care.
You will also assist the Diabetes Specialist Lead Midwife to ensure that high standards of quality care are delivered and maintained for women with diabetes and may need to deputise for the Band 7 DSM as required.
You will be expected to promote the use of quality improvement methods by frontline staff in order to deliver measurable improvements in patient care.
You will act as a resource of diabetes specialist knowledge to other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provide a high standard of midwifery care to mothers and babies during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.
Take autonomous clinical decisions in an emergency to ensure safe outcomes for mother and baby.
Able to work as as an autonomous practitioner in all aspects of midwifery practice.
Carry out risk assessments in the hospital, birth centres and community settings and safely manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies including emergency situations when medical help is not available.
Develop and maintain clinical competencies and be aware of current advances, expectations and needs of the service.
Be responsible for the implementation of evidence-based midwifery and medical practice.

- NMC Registered Midwife
Desirable criteria
- Study at Master's level or equivalent
- Managerial/leadership qualification
- Diabetes qualification
- Teaching qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of gestational diabetes and associated risks
- Ability to evaluate midwifery care
- Knowledge of frameworks and guidance informing care in diabetes
- Experience of leading and delivering education in a group setting
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of current national services framework/healthy hospitals initiative
