Locum Consultant Obs in Maternal Medicine and/or High-Risk Pregnancy

Consultant

Liverpool Women’s delivers the highest standards of care for women, babies and their families. Each year we deliver over 8,300 babies, carry out over 10,000 gynaecological procedures, and care for over 1,000 poorly and preterm newborns, making us the specialist provider of health services for women, babies and their families in Europe.

We have some of the leading experts in their field, and, after featuring on One Born Every Minute, Miracle Babies and Special Baby Unit, our teams are famous across the world for their professionalism, skill and compassion.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital clinical services are currently being reviewed by NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group, following work done by our clinicians in presenting a powerful case for change in the Future Generations Strategy.

A useful information booklet is available about the proposed changes which can be downloaded from the Healthy Liverpool website facebook.com/healthylvpool. This booklet clearly states that ‘there is absolutely no threat to the services themselves – this is about making what we have even better and protecting services for the future’.

Liverpool Women’s has an excellent reputation and is a centre of excellence. It is an exciting environment to work in and a great place to develop your career for many years to come.

Job overview

The post will provide whole time consultant level commitment to obstetrics services at the Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (at the Crown Street and University Hospital Aintree sites) and provide support to the existing Diabetes, Hypertension and Cardiac high risk antenatal clinics.

The post is to support the existing team of obstetricians who provide high-risk antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care in a locum capacity for 12 months duration to provide specific support to the already established Diabetes, Hypertension and Cardiac high risk antenatal clinics. LWHFT currently provides services to women across Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will be negotiated with the clinical lead for maternity following successful appointment to the post, but an example is given below. It will include Maternal Medicine Antenatal Clinics, Delivery Suite, Maternity Assessment Unit, elective caesarean section list and Maternity Base (antenatal/postnatal) ward rounds. A typical job plan will consist of 7.5DCC, 1.5 SPA and 1 PA for additional specified roles.

This post will have approximately 1 day a month on the Delivery Suite (08.30-20.30 hours). This also covers activities on the Midwife Led Unit and the Maternity Assessment Unit (at times when there is no dedicated consultant cover). A monthly elective caesarean section list is also included.

The obstetric service will provide 108.5 hours resident consultant Delivery Suite cover (08.30-00.00 hours, 7 days a week) from April 2023, with the vision of providing 24/7 resident cover in the next 1-2 years.

The successful candidate will participate in the ‘Consultant of the Week’ ward round rota (Monday to Friday 09.00-17.00 hours). This includes incident reviews, attending the ‘Term Admissions’ meeting on a Thursday 08.15-09.00 hours, and reviews pregnant women admitted to LUHFT for non-obstetric reasons. Other clinical commitments will be cancelled during this week.
