We have  2 exciting Band 6 clinical Research Nurse vacancies with in R&I. The post holders will be a member of the Clatterbridge research team supporting a portfolio of commercial and non-commercial cancer and early phase clinical trials. The role will include identifying patients through MDT’S/screening notes; collecting data; interviewing; supporting; treating and monitoring patients as well as data entry.

The post holder will work closely with the Advanced Research Nurse/Practitioner, relevant Lead Research Nurse, wider CCC research team, oncology/haematology clinical teams, and Clinical Nurse Specialist’s.

The post holder is employed and managed by Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, but must be aware of, and accept the requirement to work at other sites supported by Clatterbridge. Any changes will be subject to consultation with the post holder.

Main duties of the job

  • Coordinate a limited portfolio of trials. Organise appropriate appointments and manage own case-load of patients according to requirements of trial protocols.
  • Support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of clinical trials and standard protocols, assisting and supporting local nursing teams.
  • Ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care
  • Collect, process and store any blood and histology samples required for the studies in conjunction with local nursing teams
  • Keep up to date with cannulation and phlebotomy skills
  • Attend mandatory updates for chemotherapy skills, and complete yearly competencies
  • Administer a variety of therapeutic drugs within the realms of the clinical trial protocol, taking into account toxicities and dose modifications
  • Assess patients at each trial visit to ascertain their status and liaise with medical staff if any problems are identified
  • In association with MDT, provide continuity of care for patients throughout the trial protocol. Provide specific advice and support as appropriate.
  • Responsible for maintaining timely, accurate patient records and ensuring all relevant information is recorded appropriately in the patient’s medical notes

Qualifiactions

Essential criteria
  • NMC Level One registration
  • Graduate level qualification in relevant discipline, be working towards one or be prepared to study at this level
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
  • Chemotherapy trained in either oncology or haematology, or willing to undertake a period of training
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in oncology and/or clinical research

Knowledge and Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships
  • Has a working knowledge of the purpose of clinical research
Desirable criteria
  • Has a basic knowledge of recent NHS legislation and recommendations in the field of cancer and palliative care
  • Knowledge of ICH GCP

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working autonomously and as part of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of collaborating with other agencies
  • Previous experience within the oncology/haematology nursing setting, or experience in research
