Job overview

·         Skilled craftsperson will be employed on work appropriate to their specialist skills.

·         They will have the ability to fulfil their duties with a total commitment to versatility and will be suitably trained to acquire elements of other skills, as required, reaching levels of flexibility and competence to enable them to achieve and apply their abilities, where required.

Main duties of the job

·         To carry out a range of maintenance duties across the Foundation Trust premises, including repair of faults in mechanical and electrical installations; plant and equipment, painting, building fabric, grounds and gardens and general support across all core-engineering trades.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Carry out planned preventative maintenance, installation, modification and repairs to Hospital plant equipment and property including external doors, fire doors, access doors, wooden, plastic and aluminum windows, flooring, suspended ceilings, walls, fire proofing, electrical and mechanical closers, various types of locks and locking mechanisms, interior and external signage, fencing and various fixing and fixtures, glass and glazing. Maintain decorations both internal and external of all Trust properties and cleanliness of fabric, plant and equipment.

Manufacture, assemble and erect new work including shelving, notice boards, display systems, frames, screens, doors and frames, screens and partitions.

Working with speed and accuracy, use of relevant power, hand tools and fixed machinery, use of fire tools and maintenance of same.

  • Good standard of general education, GCSE Maths & English or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant relevant experience and background in the maintenance industry
  • Significant experience of working within a healthcare environment.
  • Have good understanding of the relationship of other craftsmen’s work to own work.
  • Experience of other maintenance and building activities in a range of settings
  • Understanding of Confidentiality and Information Governance
  • Knowledge of health and safety practice relevant to the building and engineering industry
  • Full participation in and commitment to continual professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Significant experience working in a complex building maintenance environment in a trade other than core trade.
  • Basic electrical safety training to be able to fulfil duties without support of other trades.
  • Understand the working of the mechanical and/or electrical and/or plumbing and/or gas systems in NHS buildings.
  • Joinery ability

  • Excellent inter-personal and communications skills
  • Ability to fulfil a requirement to interpret and work from all instructions, drawings and specifications appropriate to original trade, without supervision

  • To communicate technical information to staff, colleagues, manufacturers and members of the public.
  • To communicate effectively with peers, senior colleagues and service users on a daily basis information related to the Estates service.
  • To have organisational skills in order to plan, prioritise and negotiate with other healthcare professionals in obtaining access to equipment in order to perform routine maintenance and/or repairs at mutually convenient times
  • To train and supervise less experienced staff
  • Have good understanding of the relationship of other craftsmen’s work to own work.
  • Understanding of Confidentiality and Information Governance
  • Knowledge of health and safety practice relevant to the building and engineering industry
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to diagnose and repair faults in basic electrical systems i.e. fire doors, lighting circuits, power circuits.
  • Basic electrical and mechanical knowledge in relation to plant for shutting down to clean and maintain
  • Ability to support and assist with engineering emergencies using own initiative.
  • Ability to glaze windows, fit and maintain locks
