Job overview

We are seeking an ambitious, highly trained and committed candidates who are on the specialist register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT for the post of Consultant in Pain Medicine to join our existing team at the Walton Centre.  Opportunities are available to work within the pain management programme as well as the general pain service.  Sub – specialist interests will be encouraged and support will be given to develop these, depending on the experience of the successful candidate and the needs of the service. This is a replacement post after a retirement.

Main duties of the job

Applicants are required to hold the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent qualification, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council and to have been awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, or equivalent.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent.
  • Specialist registration with the GMC or within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview.
  • FRCA or equivalent higher diploma in a relevant speciality.
  • Specialist qualification in Pain Medicine e.g. FFPMRCA.
Desirable criteria
  • Award of Higher or degree Awards, distinctions, prizes, scholarships.
  • Studying for higher degree
  • PG Cert for Education

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Advanced Pain Training (or equivalent): Evidence of experience including procedures applicable to chronic pain medicine (e.g. logbooks) Evidence of experience of the use of CBT and or PMP regarding patient selection and management relevant to Pain Medicine.
  • For applicants with a CCT in Anaesthesia: Higher training general, urological and gynaecological surgery Higher training in head, neck, maxillofacial and dental surgery Higher training in day surgery, non-theatre and sedation Higher training in anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery and regional anaesthesia
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of PMP and related patient management
  • Minimum of 8 years of post-graduate experience since qualification in anaesthesia or relevant parent specialty.

Management and organisation

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise oneself and others in a multi-disciplinary team
  • An understanding of the NHS organisation, clinical governance and resource constraints
  • An understanding of the funding and finance issues in the NHS
  • Knowledge of recent reports and plans for the development of the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of engagement with managerial activities.
  • A management course
