Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

There are various posts that have become available for 12 months initially with a possible further extension as a Clinical Fellow in various Paediatric medical specialties in at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. Posts are available at ST4+.  There may be an opportunity to rotate within the 12-month period, but this is not guaranteed and based on service need and requirements of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Assist in the care of inpatients or shared care patients, and day cases, including planning admission, investigations, management, and follow-up. There will be opportunity to attend consultant led clinics.

Undertake initial assessment of new ward referrals and formulate differential diagnoses, investigations and management plan in liaison with the consultant of the week.

Participate in daily ward rounds of specialty patients and those referred for specialist consultation & advice by other teams.

Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings with a range of specialties through the working week. Also join MDTs arranged for individual complex patients.

Share duties with the other junior doctors and be part of the junior specialty team. Carry the specialty bleep on rotation with other JD as the first point of contact for advice for the specialty. Triage and receive calls from inpatient teams, local general practitioners and from secondary care across the Northwest for specialist advice. Discuss cases with the consultant of the week and feedback advice, recommended investigations, and management.

You will be expected to contribute to the ST4+ on-call rota.

In addition to the hospital site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool, Alder Hey has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Alder Park building in the nearby borough of Sefton.

Alder Hey offers a number of specialist services. We are one of the two accredited major trauma units for children in the North West and are also nationally commissioned as one of four epilepsy surgical centres, a service we provide in partnership with Manchester Children’s Hospital. As the regional cardiac surgical centre we continue to work with the cardiac network across the region in order to provide seamless pathways of care for children with congenital heart problems. Alder Hey hosts a regional Tier 4 inpatient unit for children under the age of 13 who require highly specialised mental health support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Inpatient and consult work

  • Inpatient care and Outpatient clinics

Assist in the care of inpatients or shared care patients, and day cases, including planning admission, investigations, management, and follow-up. There will be opportunity to attend consultant led clinics.

 

Undertake initial assessment of new ward referrals and formulate differential diagnoses, investigations and management plan in liaison with the consultant of the week.

 

  • Ward rounds

Participate in daily ward rounds of specialty patients and those referred for specialist consultation & advice by other teams; there will be opportunity to gain expertise in specific areas of various specialist medicine and this can be discussed with the successful candidate

 

  • MDTs

Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings with a range of specialities through the working week (this may involve contributing to the discussion, providing background history and investigation results and making notes of the discussion and outcome). Also join MDTs arranged for individual complex patients.

 

  • Receipt of referrals and advice

Specialty bleeps

Share duties with the other junior doctors and be part of the junior specialty team. Carry the specialty bleep on rotation with other JD as the first point of contact for advice for the specialty.   • On-call out of hours duties

Depending upon your clinical competency there will be clinical fellow positions available at both ST1-3 and ST4 level. You will be expected to contribute to the ST1-3 or ST4+ on-call rota. Out of hours shifts include long days (09:00-21:30) and night shifts (21:00-09:30) including weekends. On the ST4+ rota additional out of hours shifts include evening shifts (16:00-23:00) Monday to Friday, and short-day shifts (08:00-16:00) at weekends.

  • Full Registration and licence to practice with GMC (or eligibility for)
  • Demonstrable experience at either: ST3 and above
  • Written communication skills in English and the ability to explain clinical procedures to patients,
  • Ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organisationin research
  • 12 months experience within the NHS
  • Demonstrate evidence of ongoing commitment to personal and professional development
