Job overview
Applications are sought from exceptional Specialist Biomedical Scientists that are HCPC registered and either hold the IBMS Specialist portfolio or have significant number of years post registration experience.
You will join our friendly and enthusiastic team working in the busy Biochemistry and Immunology laboratory at our main laboratory based at Whiston Hospital and our Biochemistry essential services laboratory based at Southport Hospital.
The services are provided 24/7/365 and the post holder may be requested to work from any site where the Trust provides a service 24/7/365. The post holder is required to participate in the full out of hours rotas for both Whiston and Southport laboratories and for this an additional ~£4K (maximum) is currently paid as an Essential Specialist On-Site Payment.

Main duties of the job
Working autonomously as a Biomedical Scientist you will undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations on a rotational basis through all sections within the Department, as required on a 24/7/365 basis. You will be a good problem solver and as a member of a team are required to be a good communicator to ensure effective continuity of service.
The LIMS (Dedalus Telepath) is provided across all Pathology sites. The main laboratory site is at Whiston Hospital and the Department is equipped with state of the art Siemens automation comprising: Aptio automated track and sample management; 2 x Atellica Chemistry and Immunoassay analytical lines; Phadia 250 for automated Immunology, connected to the main track. These systems operate via Siemens ADM middleware. In addition, the Department utilises Sebia MC3 (capillary electrophoresis) for the analysis of HbA1c and MAST Pledia Sensor for FIT testing.
The Clinical Biochemistry department also comprises an Immunology section equipped with a Sebia CapillaryS CZE and Hydrsys2 scan for performing electrophoresis, and IIF microscopy for auto immunity screening and a further Phadia 250 for allergy. At the Southport site also operates Siemens Atellica technology to deliver an essential service

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- A recognised Biomedical Science degree with honours which is acceptable to the HCPC
- PgD Biomedical Sciences or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science
- Willing to pursue further qualifications e.g. MSc. Advanced specialist diploma etc
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems and standard IT packages eg word processing and spreadsheets
- Sufficient number of years post qualification experience
- Understands theoretical and practical laboratory procedures
- Ability to organise own workload and that of subordinate staff
- Evidence of CPD
- Ability to work within all areas of the department
