Job overview

Endoscopy Unit is based over two sites within our trust; it is an acute diagnostic and treatment department which provides treatment for a range of in and outpatients, with a team of 10 Consultants. The unit manager role is essential for the effective management and nursing leadership. The unit manager will have responsibility of managerial and professional accountability and ensure the quality of care delivered is effective.

Main duties of the job

To ensure optimum use of staff so that standards of care and safety are not compromised

 The post holder will ensure that Governance Processes at ward level assure the quality of care delivered to patients

 To monitor Sickness and Absence at Ward level and work closely with Matron 

 To efficiently manage the resources allocated to the ward and identify options for cost improvements and support and monitor their implementation

 To investigate an untoward incident/complaint thoroughly.  

 To create a climate conducive to the practice of a high standard of care, ensuring the safety and well being of staff, patients and visitors to the ward, especially in relation to Health & Safety

 To participate with the Matron in the recruitment, orientation, development and any other personnel issues related to staff as required.

 Ensure that all staff know, adhere to and have access to all Unit and Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

 To be responsible for ensuring the annual appraisal of all ward staff in order to implement professional and organisational targets, review performance and identify training and development needs.

 To be responsible for implementing strategies which enable quality targets to be met utilising recognised audit tools.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

·         To ensure optimum use of staff so that standards of care and safety are not compromised.

·         To establish effective communication systems so that all staff can practice in an informed and professional manner.

·         The post holder will ensure that Governance Processes at ward level assure the quality of care delivered to patients.

·         To work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to maximise best use of resources, monitoring of patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements.

·         To monitor Sickness and Absence at Ward level and work closely with Matron / Directorate Managers to ensure employees comply with policies and procedures relating to this.

·         To efficiently manage the resources allocated to the ward and identify options for cost improvements and support and monitor their implementation.

·         To investigate an untoward incident/complaint thoroughly.  Liaise promptly with the Matron.

·         To be responsible for the setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards of care within the ward.

·         To ensure that the recording of patient care is comprehensive, concise and valid.

·         To be responsible for the economical use of ward equipment and to ensure that all equipment is in safe working order and complies with the Health & Safety at Work Act/HEI 98.

·         To create a climate conducive to the practice of a high standard of care, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors to the ward, especially in relation to Health & Safety.

·         To commence and participate in research/special projects in conjunction with the Matron.

·         To participate with the Matron in the recruitment, orientation, development and any other personnel issues related to staff as required.

·         Ensure that all staff know, adhere to and have access to all Unit and Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

·         Deputise for the Matron as directed.

·         To be responsible for maintaining established links with the School of Health Care and create an effective learning for all ward staff.

·         To be responsible for ensuring the annual appraisal of all ward staff in order to implement professional and organisational targets, review performance and identify training and development needs.

·         To identify, monitor and review annually objectives which implement and reflect professional and organisational targets.

·         To be responsible for implementing strategies which enable quality targets to be met utilising recognised audit tools.

·         To be responsible for the induction and training of newly appointed staff at local level.

·         To work with members of a multidisciplinary team to establish and maintain high standards for data quality.

 

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

·         To ensure all responsible staff attend annual training updates and mandatory training.

 

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Ensure care is delivered to a high-quality standard.

·         To ensure optimum use of staff so that standards of care and safety are not compromised.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level RGN
  • Evidence of on-going professional development or a relevant diploma
  • Recognised teaching certificate
  • ILS Certification
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership/Management qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Significant recent experience as Band 6 in an acute environment
  • Evidence of quality improvement in patient care
  • Awareness of how audit may influence quality of patient care
  • Awareness, understanding and application of current evidence-based practices
  • Evidence of teaching and education experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous management experience i.e. patient case load, ward management
  • LAMDI programme
  • Knowledge of and participation in audit
