An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Band 7 Ward Manager on Ward 2C/RSU Respiratory Medicine.    

 We are currently looking to recruit a dynamic, highly motivated, and skilled Band 7 Ward Manager, with the passion to drive forward high-quality care and the patient safety agenda, along with the enthusiasm to support developments and expansion of the respiratory unit.

 Ward 2C consists of a 31 bedded respiratory ward and a six bedded NIV unit.

Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 27th April 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will report to and be professionally accountable to the Matron and should be an experienced senior nurse with a minimum of two years’ experience at Band 6 in an acute setting. The post holder will be expected to undertake training to be able to care for patients who require NIV.

The Ward Manager is responsible for ensuring that high quality, effective and safe nursing care is delivered to all patients attending our Trust and it is essential that you have the ability to work as part of a wider team. Strong visible leadership is a key attribute.

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Ward Manager is expected to be dynamic and enthusiastic and be able to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. 

  • Prior experience of leading a team is essential
  • Evidence of relevant on-going professional development
  • ENB 998 or equivalent is essential
  • Clinical leadership
  • Ongoing professional development
  • Evidence of managing change
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as Band 6 within the acute medical setting
  • A genuine desire to improve patient care

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse or Registered health professional Diploma / Degree level qualification
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Leadership training or qualification (minimum Level 4 ILM or equivalent) or equivalent experience

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of NMC professional standards for practice contained within the code
  • Experience of managing teams
  • Experience of service development, such as clinical pathway management
  • Substantial experience of working in a clinical environment
  • Understanding of budget management within the NHS at departmental level
  • Experience of involvement in relevant research/audit to underpin evidence-based practice
  • Understand key features of clinical governance and risk
