Job overview
This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Stroke post. This is a whole-time post offering Stroke Fellow post on the Whiston site of Mersey West Lancashire, an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
The successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
Contribute as a middle grade in the running of the Stroke unit at Whiston
Providing registrar level care for the hypreracute and stroke patient
Leading audit and QIP and active role in teaching
Active role in clinical governance
Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties
Advise FY1’s, CT Trainees and ANPs about management of patients
Develop skills in managing the wards to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients.
Support the development of the service, including national bench marking and ensure clinical data entry for the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme.
The SCF will also run their own TIA clinic under direct supervision of the responsible consultant.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of application
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- ALS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
- MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
- Speciality Certificate in Geriatric Medicine
- Evidence of higher learning (to Masters’ level or above)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of a broad range of medical/surgical specialties
- Experience as a core medical trainee or has equivalent experience and competencies
- Experience of working in geriatric medicine
- Understanding of Audit
- Evidence of active participation in audit
- Understanding of Research
- Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others
Desirable criteria
- Active participation in research projects
Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience of applying clinical knowledge and judgment and prioritise clinical need
- Experience technical competence/diagnostics skills and judgment required
- Excellent communication skills, capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively to others, able to discuss treatment options with patients and their families in a way they can understand
- Judgement to work under pressure, capacity to work effectively under pressure and remain objective in emotive/pressurised situations
- Able to perform well within a multidisciplinary team
