This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow AWR and Advanced Colorectal Cancer.

This is a 12 months fixed term post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. 

Main duties of the job

The Senior Clinical Fellow in AWR and Advanced Colorectal Cancer is post CCT or Senior Registrar level role focussed on managing complex surgical cases.

Providing specialised care in advanced colorectal malignancy.

Acting as a bridge between trainees and Consultants managing colorectal inpatients, ward rounds, theatres and clinics  plus time set aside for research, study and administration.

The job plan may be adjusted depending on the service requirements and following consultation with the post holder.

The successful candidate will be joining an enthusiastic and forward-thinking department comprising of 13 Consultants.

The department offers excellent training and development opportunities and the post holders are expected to support the elective and non elective demand and participate in the daytime and weekend on call rota.

The post is offered on the basis that the successful applicant will work flexibly and join the on call rota undertaking General Surgery duties; the rate of resident on call will be 1 in 13 and the successful applicant will be remunerated appropriately for on call work in line with existing terms and conditions.

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualifications
  • FRCS
  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of application
  • ATLS
  • ST7 grade or above
Desirable criteria
  • JAG Colonoscopy accreditation/ Colonoscopy experience
  • Robotic experience

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge/experience of managing General Surgical patients
  • Experience and an understanding of audit
  • Evidence of active participation in audit
  • Evidence and an understanding of research
  • Experience of applying sound clinical knowledge and judgment and prioritise clinical need
  • Excellent technical competence/diagnostics skills and judgment required
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Communication skills, capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively to others, able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand
  • Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
  • Awareness of own limitations
  • Judgement to work under pressure, capacity to work effectively under pressure and remain objective in highly emotive/pressurised situations
