This post is for a consultant in Cardiology. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

The successful candidate can play a leading role in shaping the future of cardiology and improving further on care provided to our patients.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview.

ACC will be held on Friday 27th March 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post will primarily be based at Southport District General Hospital with the potential to work across the Mersey and West Lancashire hospital sites.

There is no on-call commitment with this post.

The appointment is to the trust, not to specific hospitals and will have sessions at both Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines / pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee would be joining a complement of Thirty-Three consultants and would be expected to participate in the provision of a comprehensive Cardiology Services across both sites. The primary acute site for Cardiology will be Southport Hospital.

The allocation for time between the various duties of the posts will be open to some adjustment in consultation with consultant colleagues and the employing Trust.

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. To demonstrate equivalence to the UK Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), international doctors must apply for a CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) through the GMC, providing extensive evidence that their training and experience match the UK CCT curriculum.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships and communication with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, good teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity, delivery of good acute clinical care
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the cardiology curriculum and applying to this post
  • Competency in Heart Failure management
  • Competency in Pacing, Nuclear or Cardiology and/ or CT angiography
Desirable criteria
  • Cardiology subspecialty interest suitable for DGH development

Teaching Experience

  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience
