Job overview
The Facilities Department at Southport District General Hospital are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Maintenance Assistant to carry out routine maintenance work on a variety of hospital plant and equipment and to assist maintenance craftsmen of all trades when required.
The post holder will be expected to carry out maintenance requests in an efficient and effective manner to support successful delivery of a customer focused estate maintenance service for the Trust. In addition will be required to perform routine duties which may be delegated by the maintenance team leader with the minimum of supervision and have a flexible and positive approach to the role.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be able to carry out semi-skilled duties and repairs to all building services including general building work as well as participation in the planned preventative maintenance scheme including monitoring of water temperature, mixing valves etc in accordance with the Trusts Water Safety Management Policy.
You will be required to assist all tradesmen and other maintenance assistants of differing Building Services engaged on maintenance work throughout the Trust areas of responsibility
Previous experience in a maintenance / building services environment is essential and some plumbing knowledge / experience is desirable.
The successful applicant must hold a current driving license and be flexible with working hours.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Carry out risk assessments for work carried out by self.
- Follow and ensure compliance with all Trust Procedures and policies including Health and Safety and Risk management.
- Liaise with Trust management, Nursing personnel, Support personnel and contractors where this is within their capabilities.
- Carry out installation, repair, and maintenance work on the building fabric, a wide range of mechanical/electrical equipment, building services and plant in accordance with relevant Health Technical memoranda, water bylaws, British standards, codes of practice, and legislation
- Actively participate in the operation of planned preventative maintenance schemes.
- Undertake the full range of Maintenance Assistants duties, using hand and power tools and test equipment.
- Carry out manual handling of heavy objects (20kg) as required (after suitable training) to keep plant and equipment running as required.
- Carry out cleaning, decontamination, specialist fault diagnosis and repairs of patient related and specialised equipment.
- Participate in the On Call Gritting Rota as and when required
- The post holder shall liaise with patients, nursing staff, management and other support staff to ascertain the extent of problems
- Carry a radio or similar communication device as and when required
- The post holder will undertake mandatory training to enable the Trust to meet its obligations under its policies and legislation.
- Update knowledge of new techniques / equipment as necessary
- The post holder will carry our driving duties as necessary.
- The post holder will be required to assist crafts persons and other estates staff as necessary.
- The Maintenance Assistant will be based at either Ormskirk or Southport but will be expected to work from any base to match the demands of the service.
- The post holder should have some previous building or engineering experience
- The post holder should be able to move 25kg items and climb vertical ladders
- Appropriate training will be given as necessary
