Job overview
The post holder is responsible for providing support to nursing staff in the management of children and families within Paediatric Continence encompassing clerical, technical and ancillary duties.
Assist nurses with procedures, the post holder will be responsible for the coordination of the continence product provision (this is part of continence support and full training will be provided) and will provide toilet training to children and families who are open to the service where appropriate.
The post holder will receive patients into clinic and provide them with the necessary information and advice as advised by the clinical staff and provide a high standard of direct nursing care ensuring patient dignity and Safeguarding is maintained. Be able to work under remote supervision.
The Paediatric Continence Service provides a wide range of specialities for patients from the St Helens & Halton area. This role is to support the Paediatric service in covering clinics from 09:00 – 17:00. The service provides treatment and coordination for a range of continence conditions including bladder and bowel, night wetting, and day wetting up to 19 years of age.
The post holder must hold a full, valid UK driver’s license and have access to their own car to travel between sites across St Helens and Halton.
An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.
Main duties of the job
- To create a child friendly environment by maintaining regular risk assessments, ensuring equipment and toys are clean and in safe working order, panic buttons checked regularly, emergency equipment checked daily, and Department decorated to a child friendly standard.
- To have an understanding of the different emotions and needs of the children attending the department, demonstrating good communication skills and a friendly manner.
- Utilising IT skills ensure patient electronic records are available for consultation and contain relevant information prior to the commencement of the clinic.
- Assist the clinician in joint clinics with any patient procedures and chaperone patients when required ensuring patient privacy and dignity is maintained.
- Give information and advice when appropriate to patients both verbally and written and ensure patients understanding of information and direct patients to other departments when necessary.
- Carry out appropriate patient care after appropriate training.
- At the conclusion of clinics ensure consulting rooms are cleaned and tidied and ensure all necessary documentation is directed to the appropriate department.
- To work at clinical, education and domiciliary sites across Halton and St Helens as required.
- Prepare and ensure all consulting rooms are ready for use prior to the commencement of specific clinics including cleaning rooms as per hospital policy and that all necessary documentation is available for use by the clinician

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NNEB/NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development or equivalent. e.g.CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education or BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development.
- Educated to GSCE level in Maths or English or equivalent qualification or relevant experience in a Health Care Setting
- Diploma or equivalent appropriate qualification, e.g foundation degree, or NVQ3 Level qual or relevant experience equivalent to diploma level.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of clinical skills required to undertake the role
- Experience of relevant work in childcare
- Knowledge of Safeguarding/Children and Vulnerable Adults procedures
- Be able to work under remote supervision
- Evidence of working within a team
