Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated, sensitive, forward-thinking midwife with a broad range of experience to become our Head of Midwifery/Head of Services (Gynae and Breast) at Arrowe Park Hospital.

The Postholder will be an exceptional leader with in-depth knowledge of governance and assurance mechanisms, operational management experience of maternity services both in the community, continuity and the hospital. The postholder will inspire confidence and innovation amongst our incredible workforce who together, ensure the women/birthing people and staff are safe, cared for and listened too.

The postholder will work collaboratively with the maternity matron, gynae and breast matron, maternity managers, consultant midwife, service managers, governance and education teams to provide seamless pathways of care and ensure a positive safety and team culture.

Main duties of the job

The Head of Midwifery/Services will work as a member of the Women and Children’s (W&C) Divisional Leadership team chaired by the Associate Medical Director for the Division.

They will support the Divisional Director of Operations (DDO) to manage the operational performance of the W&C Division and will provide leadership cover for annual leave and other absences.

The post holder acts as delegated lead for safety, quality and patient experience. They are responsible for the development and application of systems, control processes and risk management arrangements that ensure full compliance with internal and external governance procedures and to benchmark against best practice requirements.

The post holder will work with the division to develop the strategic direction which maximises business efficiency, effectiveness, flexibility and staff morale.

They will support the development of a culture within the W&C Division, which is open to and empowers innovation, creativity and learning at ward and department level. The Head of Midwifery/Services will provide strong visible and professional leadership to midwives and nurses across the Division.

The post holder will be a registered midwife have clinical credibility and be visible in clinical areas.

The Head of Midwifery/Services will work with senior managers across the organisation to ensure the effective use of beds whilst maintaining quality of care. The post holder will participate in the hospital manager on call rota

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Masters level (or ability to work towards) / equivalent experience with a relevant professional qualification
  • Relevant registration (NMC with relevant senior experience
  • Operational / management experience of working within relevant service
  • Management Qualification or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Additional management / leadership qualification
  • Dual qualification - Registered Nurse

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Management Experience at senior clinical position/Matron level or above
  • Experience of staff development/human resource management
  • Knowledge of the Safeguarding Framework and experience of working collaboratively with the Named Nurse/Named Midwife /Safeguarding team/Domestic Violence lead.
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing Professional Development
  • Evidence of embedding Quality Governance and Evidence Based Practice
  • Evidence of managing quality initiatives which include patient involvement
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of working in partnership with NHS or non NHS organisations

Knowledge and Skills

  • Evidence of the ability to motivate and lead staff, including establishing and maintaining relationships
  • Oral and written communication e.g. skills to include communicating effectively, report writing and business case development
  • Evidence of managing a budget and supporting the delivery of CIP
