Job overview

The Surgical Emergency Unit is looking for a dynamic and motivated Health Care Assistant to join our team. If you thrive in a fast paced environment and are keen to learn and develop then this role is for you.

We are a 20  bedded  unit that provides urgent care and assessment for a diverse range of acutely unwell surgical patients.

We also have an ambulatory area, that comprises of 6 trollies and 14 chairs, providing initial assessment for patients referred via their general practitioners. No day is ever the same; it is a fast paced area that provides excellent patient care.

This post is a permanent,  part time position with the expectation that you would  rotate between days, nights and weekends.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide personal care for patients including bathing, assisting with toileting, feeding and care in the last days of life
  • Works in accordance to the Trust policies and procedures
  • Provides support/ guidance  to new starters and others as appropriate
  • Assists the registered nurses in administering direct patient care
  • Informs registered nurses of changes in patients' condition or observations.
  • Prioritise own workload
  • Acts as escort and chaperone as required
  • Communicates with patients/ carers/ relatives considering patients individual needs.
  • Assist in keeping ward area clean and tidy and complies with infection control policy.
  • Ensure availability, cleanliness and maintenance of essential ward equipment. 
  • Undertakes some clerical duties such as answering telephone, greeting new patients, filing.

Knowledge & Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience and training of manual handling patients using appropriate equipment
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of the importance of promoting patient independence
  • Able to provide support and reassurance to patients.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Level 2 qualification (e.g. GCSE Grade A-C, NVQ2) in Health & Social Care OR A good standard of general education to GCSE level and the agreement to undertake the relevant L2 qualification on appointment
  • Completion of the Care Certificate theory and practice standards within 12 weeks of commencing employment with the Trust.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a clinical environment
  • Experience working in the NHS
