Job overview
Applications are invited to join a team of 5 Substantive Consultant Nephrologists (including this post) on the Wirral Peninsula. The new appointee will be expected to have a broad based nephrology background. Applicants with sub specialty skills / interest in medical PD insertion and home therapies would be welcomed but are not essential. The post holder will be employed by Wirral University Teaching Hospital (NHS) Foundation Trust but will also carry out work (including outpatient clinics and dialysis reviews) at the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the job
Outpatients
The post-holder will look after haemodialysis patients (approximately 30 patients in total) at The Clatterbridge Unit and Countess of Chester. We would encourage appointees to run the Haemodialysis Clinics when the patients attend for their dialysis sessions, as this has proven very popular with the patients. However, this is entirely up to the new Consultant how they organise their dialysis OPD.
On Call Details
The post-holder is involved in a one week in five on call rota. During this week the Consultant Nephrologist is on call for all nephrology inpatients at Arrowe Park Hospital and reviews any inpatient referrals at the Countess of Chester Hospital with daily ward rounds carried out Monday to Sunday as well as being on call for any renal emergencies. There are occasional inpatient admissions for renal biopsies at Chester otherwise, there are no in-patients admitted under Nephrology.
The on call week has been calculated as annually attracting 4.25 PAs (3.75 predictable and 0.5 unpredictable).
Inpatient Workload
Arrowe Park has 10 dedicated renal in-patient beds on Ward 36, with 10 to 30 inpatients at any given time. There are no Nephrology in-patient beds at The Countess of Chester Hospital, with approximately 5 to 15 patients at any given time. Management of all inpatients is carried out by the Nephrologist of the Week (see on-call section below for further detail).

All new colleagues can expect to receive a warm and friendly Wirral welcome from the very first time they make contact with us. We are described as “competent and caring staff” by our patients.
