We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented
Assistant Technical Accountant(Band 6) to join our Finance team. This is a key role supporting the delivery of high-quality financial services, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the Trust’s financial information.
The postholder will play a central role in maintaining robust financial controls, including the coordination of control account reconciliations, supporting the preparation of annual accounts, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and statutory requirements. The role also involves investigating complex financial queries and providing professional advice and guidance to both finance and non-finance colleagues across the organisation.
Working closely with the Technical Accountant, you will contribute to continuous improvement within the Finance function, supporting service development and enhancing financial processes and systems. You will also have line management responsibility for finance staff, ensuring effective team performance and development.

Coordinate and review monthly control account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of discrepancies

Support the preparation of the Trust’s annual accounts and ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Investigate and resolve complex financial queries from internal and external stakeholders, providing clear advice and guidance

Ensure adherence to Standing Financial Instructions, financial policies, and VAT regulations

Develop, review, and improve financial processes, systems, and reporting to enhance efficiency and control.

Liaise with internal and external audit, supporting audit processes and implementing recommendation.

Provide financial advice and support to non-finance managers to aid informed decision-making

Monitor financial performance and contribute to achieving key targets, including BPPC

Line manage finance staff, including appraisals, training, recruitment, and workload allocation.

Contribute to continuous improvement and service development within the Finance Department

Job Description
The Assistant Technical Accountant (Band 6) is a key role within the Finance team, responsible for supporting the accurate and compliant management of the Trust’s financial position. The postholder will ensure that financial information is processed in accordance with established procedures, statutory requirements, and best practice, while investigating and resolving complex financial enquiries.
The role plays a central part in maintaining strong financial governance, including coordinating control account reconciliations, supporting the production of annual accounts, and ensuring adherence to financial policies and procedures. The postholder will interpret financial regulations and provide specialist advice to both finance colleagues and non-finance managers across the organisation.
Working closely with the Technical Accountant, the postholder will contribute to the continuous development and improvement of financial systems, processes, and reporting. The role also includes responsibility for supervising and developing finance staff, ensuring effective service delivery and high performance.
The Assistant Technical Accountant will liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including auditors, suppliers, and service leads, and will support the organisation in maintaining high standards of financial control, transparency, and accountability.


Main Responsibilities

 

Ensure all financial transactions are processed accurately and in line with financial procedures, policies, and statutory requirements

Coordinate and review monthly control account reconciliations, ensuring discrepancies are identified, investigated, and resolved promptly

Support the preparation of annual accounts, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory reporting standards

Investigate and resolve complex financial queries, providing clear advice to both finance and non-finance stakeholders

Communicate effectively with staff, suppliers, and customers regarding financial matters, including sensitive or complex issues

Provide expert financial advice and guidance to managers across the organisation to support decision-making

Maintain compliance with Standing Financial Instructions, Standing Orders, and financial policies

Liaise with internal and external auditors, supporting audits and implementing recommendations where required

Monitor financial processes and systems, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing changes to enhance efficiency and control

Assist in the development and review of financial systems, reports, and procedures to ensure they remain fit for purpose

Undertake financial analysis, audits, and data reviews to support service delivery and continuous improvement

Monitor performance against key financial targets and contribute to achieving organisational objectives, including payment performance targets

Support the organisation in maintaining compliance with VAT regulations and provide guidance where required

Maintain positive supplier relationships by supporting the resolution of complex payment queries

Contribute to service development initiatives within the Finance function

Support the preparation and maintenance of financial policies, procedures, and guidance documentation

Provide training and support to non-finance staff on financial processes, systems, and policies

Line manage designated finance staff, including performance management, appraisals, training, and workload allocation

Ensure effective team performance, supporting staff development and promoting a culture of continuous improvement

Deputise for the Senior Financial Accountant as required

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma level/Finalist of one of the CCAB bodies or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Degree or post graduate level management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 3 years experience in a financial setting
  • At least 3 years staff supervision experience
  • Experience of data analysis and report preparation
  • Experience within a financial setting
  • Previous experience of managing teams
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment
  • Experience of working under pressure and meeting deadlines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS Finance Department
  • Experience in a procurement team within the public sector environment or equivalent
  • Project / change management experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate with knowledge of various software packages, including Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the NHS finance regime
  • Understanding of delivering high quality customer service
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Oracle ledger systems
  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence
