Clinical Team Manager – Specialist Perinatal Service 

We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and passionate Team Manager to lead the Mid-Mersey Specialist Perinatal Team (MM SPT), supporting communities in Knowsley, St Helens, Warrington, and Halton. 

The Specialist Perinatal Service, jointly provided by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust (MCFT) and Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP), delivers specialist assessment and treatment to mothers, birthing people, babies, and families from pregnancy to 24 months, with particular focus on perinatal loss and trauma.

Perinatal mental health is a national priority. The post-holder will provide operational, leadership, and clinical support to the team, ensuring equitable, safe, and high-quality care, contributing to service transformation, and maintaining team stability and continuity during the maternity leave period.

The role involves building strong relationships with key partners and stakeholders, working collaboratively to meet the current and future needs of the population, and responding flexibly to workforce and service challenges. A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach is essential to manage complex issues while sustaining a high-performing team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will  be responsible for the overall standards which will include referral management and access, assessment of need and delivery of care within Specialist Perinatal Service.

The post holder will operate as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary team and be flexible in terms of travel to undertake duties. 


The post-holder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, and the setting of standards of care within that team.


The post holder may be required to work flexibly across all divisional sites to provide response to the service needs of the physical and mental health clinical teams providing cover as directed by the Service Manager to ensure continuity of a quality service provision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide a role model for others in the delivery of high-quality clinical care and be reliable and consistent in own approach to work commitments

Ensure clear communications strategies are in place for the dissemination of information to the team within defined clinical area.

Communicate complex information across organisational boundaries to ensure the understanding of patient health needs, service development requirements and provision.

Maintain effective communication both within and outside the clinical team to ensure that patient needs are met by the most appropriate agency

Effectively communicate verbally, in written and electronic format

Maintain contemporaneous clinical records in line with Community Division/ CYP&F / Trust clinical records policies

Carry out your duties in a way that supports the Trust values in all participation with patients, carers, work colleagues, people in other organisations and members of the public.

Work within the requirements of the CYP&F SPMMHS instructions and policies.

Analytical and Judgmental Skills

Be vigilant to service needs and prioritise unpredictable issues that require sustained attention despite competing issues

Ensure that there is a clearly defined model of care and that all staff understand and can articulate how the model affects their practice

Be responsible for dealing with formal and informal complaints in line with the Trust and local procedure for managing complaints

Planning and Organisational Skills

Responsible for the line management of the team within SPMMHS, this will include the development of clear leadership and supervision arrangements

Develop and use flexible and innovative approaches to practice that are appropriate to the needs of the patient group, and which are in line with the goals of the Trust.

Ensure clinical standards are developed and maintained and that corrective action is taken where practice falls short of the desired standard

Patient/Client Care

Manage care packages including holistic assessment, planning, monitoring and evaluation of complex care packages, utilising recognised models and tools.

Provide relevant clinical information, education and support for women and birthing people, babies, children and young people, family members, carers and other relevant professionals

Work in partnership with other health & social care / multidisciplinary team colleagues, voluntary and statutory organisations to ensure that the health and social care needs of the service users in SPMMHS are identified.

Ensure all aspects of Care are delivered to the highest possible standard.

Be the primary contact for clinical issues including the coordination and facilitation of responses to concerns, incident reports and complaints and requirements for performance information

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Willing to undertake a management qualification
  • Degree qualification relevant to field of practice or demonstrable evidence of study at a higher level

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist expertise underpinned by theory
  • Post registration experience in a senior role within Mental health, Parent Infant, or complex needs services
  • Line management responsibilities and experience.
  • Able to demonstrate a history of leading on clinical care improvement initiative.
  • To be able to travel around the area of work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of staff performance managements
  • Recent relevant experience of leading a team and providing care in a secure setting
  • Experience of working within perinatal and/or maternal mental health services
