Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for  an Occupational Therapist to join our Unplanned Care Therapy Team. The post holder will have the opportunity to gain experience in working across our busy A&E, Assessment areas including frailty at the front door. 

There are opportunities to engage in training and development, innovative practice and service development. 

You will have professional support for your CPD from Band 7 Therapy team Leaders and support from Senior Occupational Therapists from other specialities as required.

The post may also require working with the other inpatient therapy teams to provide senior therapy support.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to come and join our teams.  

Main duties of the job

- Assesses and treats own caseload of patients / clients in a speciality and maintains associated records.
- To have a responsibility for Training & Development of occupational therapy staff, students and other staff groups in this speciality. Supervise less experienced occupational therapists, assistants and students.
- Participates as a member of the therapy team and the MDT within a specified clinical area.
- Has a responsibility re-own CPD and other developmental activities.
- Involvement in identifying and carrying out departmental audit, research or service development activity.
- Participates in weekend, evening and Bank Holiday on-call for acute respiratory patients.
- Participates in providing 7-day services and extended working day, as required by the service. (Our service works on extended hours rotas working between 8 am and 6pm.)

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have an enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 month.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Graduate Diploma or BSc Occupational Therapy or equivalent qualification recognised by HCPC (or student Occupational Therapist with qualification pending)
  • HCPC registration
  • Appropriate experience as a qualified Occupational Therapist
  • Core Rotations as a Band 5 Therapists in a range of core areas: Orthopaedics, Medical or Frailty Inpatients, Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Previous care experience
  • Experience working as part of multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapists or similar
  • High level of clinical reasoning with excellent theoretical knowledge underpinning practice
  • Demonstrate a good awareness of needs of patient and appropriate action to take
  • Demonstrate awareness of the roles of others in providing patient care and ability to work as an effective team member
  • Experience supervising junior, students or non-qualified staff
  • Student Educator Course

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Basic computer skills
  • Well developed theoretical knowledge under pinning Occupational Therapy practice
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good analytical, problem solving and clinical reasoning skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience in hospital computer system
  • Ability to communicate within difficult circumstances and demonstrate empathetic approach to patients.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), analytical, problem solving skills and clinical reasoning
  • Understanding of national issues and relating them to own clinical practice
