**An immediate start, full time, secondment opportunity  has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist (Band 5) to join our Therapy Team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (WUTH).  This position is likely to be working in the team in emergency medicine and unplanned admissions until the end of March 2026, although other rotations placement location could be considered from the following - Department of Medicine for the Elderly, Orthopaedics (trauma and elective), Medicine, Surgery, Acute Neuro, Neuro Rehabilitation (at Clatterbridge Rehabilitation Centre) if there was a preference.

Each team has a dedicated therapy office shared with physiotherapy and assistant colleagues to support collaborative working.  The Therapies Directorate supports student training and apprenticeship roles in both Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.  New recruits are supported as preceptors by the Practice Education Facilitators and can link in with the Therapies Clinical Educator.

The service also works with Community Partners and offering  rotations in discharge to assess bed based services.  We are committed to to exploring opportunities to further expand rotations available for staff to support clinical development

  • To communicate effectively with staff, patients, relatives and carers and other agencies regarding care and treatment in order to co-ordinate care and to ensure effective and appropriate planning and delivery of treatment. 
  • To be managed by a therapy team leader.
  • To maintain good working relationships with all other staff involved in patient care.
  •  To establish a rapport with patients in order to gain their compliance  with the treatment programmes. 
  • To communicate effectively with patients and adapt approach where there may be barriers to understanding eg deaf, confusion.
  • To be a caring, responsible member of the AHP service and to take a full part in the life of the Department.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Meini prawf hanfodol
  • Graduate Diploma or BSc Occupational Therapy or equivalent qualification recognised by HCPC (or student Occupational Therapist with qualification pending)
  • HCPC registration (or pending)
  • Appropriate experience as a student or qualified Occupational Therapist
  • Previous care experience
  • Student placements in a range of core areas: Orthopaedics, Medical or Frailty Inpatients, Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Experience working as part of multidisciplinary team

  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapists or similar
  • Active collection of relevant CPD in portfolio
  • High level of clinical reasoning with excellent theoretical knowledge underpinning practice
  • Demonstrate a good awareness of needs of patient and appropriate action to take
  • Demonstrate awareness of the roles of others in providing patient care and ability to work as an effective team member

Knowledge and Skills

  • Well developed theoretical knowledge under pinning Occupational Therapy practice
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good analytical, problem solving and clinical reasoning skills

  • Ability to communicate within difficult circumstances and demonstrate empathetic approach to patients
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), analytical, problem solving skills and clinical reasoning
  • Understanding of national issues and relating them to own clinical practice
