Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary within the Medical Division working within the Cardiology department, based in Arrowe Park Hospital.

This interesting and varied role requires the ability to work well on your own initiative whilst being committed to teamwork as you will need to work with others to meet the patients’ needs.

This position also requires good communication skills, the ability to meet the demands of working in a busy environment and is able to represent the department with due professionalism.

Main duties of the job

You will responsible for implementing and managing systems for the office/team workload, ensuring work is completed within strict timescales.

You will need to exercise your judgement and initiative based on experience and knowledge of arising problems and taking appropriate action to resolve situations, including follow up with investigation results, ensuring that all results are presented to medical staff and subsequently actioned/filed into patients medical records.

You will have the ability to work under pressure, prioritise your workload and to deal with confidential and sensitive issues in a professional manner.

The minimum requirements for this post are:-

  • Minimum of 2 years secretarial experience
  • Audio-Typing experience
  • AMSPAR Medical Secretarial Diploma or equivalent experience
  • RSA 111 Word Processing (or equivalent)
  • Good IT Skills/ ECDL would be desirable

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • AMSPAR Medical Secretarial Diploma or equivalent experience
  • RSA III word processing or equivalent
  • Experience of audio typing
  • Previous administrative experience working with in the NHS or medical environment
  • Experience of using own initiative and prioritising workload, using organisational skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising more junior staff

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent IT skills including use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent time management/ organisational skills
  • Awareness of Trust guidelines regarding complaints, confidentiality etc.
  • Awareness of relevant NHS/departmental targets for example 18 week RTT and cancer
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using CERNER or relevant patient database
