Job overview

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated  Ophthalmology Retinal Fellow to join our existing team of 8 consultants and 2 SAS Drs who offer both general and specialist Ophthalmic services such as glaucoma, retinal and eye casualty. 

The ophthalmology service is supported by an excellent team consisting of Nurses, Orthoptists, Optometrists and Specialist Imaging Staff.

Main duties of the job

The principle role of the post-holder is to be an active member of the team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside Vitreoretinal consultants managing AMD,  Diabetic and RVO patients.

We encourage the personal development of our Retinal Fellow and a full job plan, which includes opportunity for training alongside retinal consultants. The post-holder is key to the team and is expected to take a teamwork approach to relationships with other departments, clinic and theatre staff.

The post-holder is invited to contribute to academic, audit and clinical governance issues within the department and the Trust.

Person specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOpht / FRCOphth / FRCS or equivalent
  • Three years full time hospital service at SHO level or higher grade with at least 24 months in Opthalmology
Desirable criteria
  • Good general ophthalmology training - preferably to CCT level or equivalent
  • Previous experience in retinal specialty

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Be capable of working in a semi-independent capacity
  • Experience with intraocular surgery, proficiency at phacoemulsification
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to teach cataract surgery to junior doctors

Other Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to teach junior doctors
  • Ability to work with other members of the team
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience
  • Participation in clinical audit
  • Participation in clinical research
