Job overview
Porters are responsible for carrying out the duties of patient and materials movement, ensuring that outside areas are kept litter free. They may be requested to work in any location which is part of the Health Board and act as a vehicle driver when required. The provision of linen services and receipt and delivery of supplies will also apply if applicable to the area / site the porter is assigned to.
Main duties of the job
- Carry out tasks as directed by supervisor.
- Carry out specific duties appropriate to the portering functions in individual departments ensuring that all necessary tasks are completed.
- Plan collection and delivery of articles as directed by departmental head when providing cover in R+D
- Driving duties as required.
- To plan and organise accurate and timely daily delivery and collection of mail when working in post room.
- To deliver urgent medical records to departments as requested.
- To undertake a variety of physically demanding tasks.
- To ensure that the following duties are completed in accordance with Trust, Departmental and statutory procedures.
- To collect Transfusion blood for all wards and departments.
- Ordering taxi’s at main entrance for patients on request.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Working within a busy customer focused and productive work environment (preferably within a healthcare setting).
Desirable criteria
- Prior work experience of porter or transport services with the health service or related work e.g. retail, factory, HM forces
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Educated to a good standard of education or relative work experience
- Full driving license. (Cat B license holders with a Cat D1 driver entitlement).
Desirable criteria
- Basic knowledge of porter or transport, waste, caretaker, security services, healthcare porter services
Aptitude
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate at all levels
- Ability to work as part of a team
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
