Job overview

The Emergency Department (ED) is a small and friendly department seeing approximately 64,000 adult and paediatric patients per year.  An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow to join the multi-disciplinary ED Team.

This post is fixed term for up to 9 months to cover maternity leave.

These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales. Further details can be found at BMA+-+Framework+Agreement+Wales.

Main duties of the job

Key duties include assessing and contributing to the immediate management of new patients, comprising the entire spectrum of emergency presentations

To act when necessary as resuscitation team leader for seriously ill or injured patients, including children, while they are in the Emergency Department

To contribute to the supervision and management of clinical shifts as required while on duty, managing the disposition of clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow

To support the supervision and training of junior medical staff

To adhere to the principles of good medical practice as laid down by the General Medical Council

To maintain a licence to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal using the all Wales online Medical Appraisal Scheme and to formulate a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the Clinical Lead, to identify training and development needs  To undergo a job plan review at least annually and agree and then meet service outcomes

Qualifications and Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Eligibility to work and live in the UK
  • Hold a valid ALS, APLS/EPLS or ETC/ATLS certificate
  • Ability to provide complete employment history
Desirable criteria
  • Success in MRCEM or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Foundation Competencies from UKFPO or equivalent
  • Evidence of at least 4 years postgraduate clinical experience
  • Competent to work without direct clinical supervision, where appropriate
  • Able to manage the high volume of patients attending the ED and be able to prioritise high acuity patients
Desirable criteria
  • Previous work in emergency medicine at ST3+ level or equivalent in the UK
  • Able to act as the senior doctor on the shop floor
  • Able to support junior doctors and allied health professionals in the management of cases in minors, majors, resuscitation area and paediatrics
  • Knowledge, interest and commitment to clinical audit
  • Knowledge, interest and commitment to clinical governance

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of competence in managing acute medical and trauma emergencies in adults and paediatrics
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise patients based on acuity
  • Able to work as a team leader or team member
  • Good relevant practical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor status in at least one life support course
  • Able to teach clinical skills, pertinent to emergency medicine on the shop floor
