Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Cwm Taf Morgannwg for full time Mortuary and Bereavement support officers who will be trained to work across the health board sites.

The post-holder will undertake a range of duties and contribute to the efficient and effective running of the mortuary service, working under their own initiative and prioritising their own workload to ensure the smooth running of a very busy service and become an integral member of the team

The applicant should have a good standard of general education and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an attention to detail and an ability to learn new tasks. They will need to have a sound knowledge of a range of Microsoft office packages. An understanding of customer care and meeting the needs of the general public is necessary for this position, therefore an excellent telephone and communication manner will need to be demonstrated.

Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn’t mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t ‘fluency’, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health. Main duties of the job

Organise and co-ordinate the daily caseload to ensure that required tasks are undertaken and completed in a timely manner.  

Receive and release of bodies, ensuring that they meet quality standards of identification and documentation as defined in Standard Operating Procedures. 

Prepare and measure bodies. Prepare and lay out bodies in the viewing facility to be viewed by relatives, friends or police. 

Deal with telephone and other enquiries relating to the service both from inside and outside the UHB, dealing with queries efficiently and politely.

Liaise with the Medical Examiner Service and doctors to ensure the completion of death certificates as required. 

Maintain high standards of hygiene within the mortuary and associated areas.

Clean and disinfect equipment and report any problems to the departmental manager. Undertake assessment of infection risks on bodies received in the mortuary.

Drive the mortuary’s private ambulance in accordance with the provision of the service.

Ensure the secure keeping of the department’s private ambulance vehicle and fuel charge card.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service or possess equivalent qualification or demonstrate skills, knowledge and experience to equivalency.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of death registration and statutory duties.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Medical Examiners Office.
  • Knowledge of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) structures.
  • Knowledge of customs of other faiths and ethnic groups surrounding death.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in the care of the deceased.
  • Proven record of excellent communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven record of working in the care of the deceased.
  • Experience record of working with distressed and bereaved clients.

Aptitude

Essential criteria
  • Excellent telephone and communication skills.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Must be able to drive as role requires post holder to drive private ambulance.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and empathy when dealing with the deceased and their relatives.
  • Good general literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative with minimum supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh language speaking/listening skills at Level 3 or above
