Job overview
We are looking for an experienced health care professional who is self-motivated, dynamic and forward thinking to support the further development of a progressive Lymphoedema Service within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The Lymphoedema Practitioner will act as an expert resource providing specialist advice regarding the clinical management of individuals presenting with non-cancer and cancer related Lymphoedema.
This post will support to empower and enable the community and wound care services to provide effective management of chronic oedema, Lymphoedema and wet legs. Through the implementation of evidence based best practice care, people with chronic oedema, wet legs and wounds will receive efficient, safe and effective compression management.
The post holder will work collaboratively with the Community Nursing Service, and Wound Clinics, ensuring patient care is delivered to the highest quality care, utilising research and evidence based practice in line with local and national policies, professional standards and guidance. They will initiate the training, coaching and supporting of all community-based staff in the specialty of chronic oedema and the management of wet legs, superficial wounds with appropriate compression therapy. They will develop new education opportunities support the programme and create procedures to endure underpinning knowledge.
Main duties of the job
Take delegated responsibility from the Lymphoedema Lead Specialist for managing patients, within a variety of settings, with lymphoedema and be responsible for providing clinical assessment and treatment plans for these patients.
Manage own daily caseload, supervise and guide/mentor junior staff and students.
Undertake specific tasks as delegated by the lead Lymphoedema Specialist.
Support the Lymphoedema Lead Specialist in developing Lymphoedema services across the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Community.
Delegate duties to the Lymphoedema Assistant, as appropriate.
Be expected to support junior staff within their sphere of responsibility, and contribute to the Continuing Professional Development of colleagues within Primary, Community and Secondary care settings.
Deliver sensitive information during clinical consultations. Discuss and facilitate the patients’ decision-making process regarding future treatment plans.
Utilise motivational and negotiating techniques to encourage patients to follow the best course of action or treatment when they are resistant to change, frightened or in denial.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A Registered General Nurse or Registered Allied Health Care Professional
- Lymphoedema Management qualification to Diploma Level or willingness to work towards
- Post Registration training in Lymphoedema Management, Dermatology, Tissue Viability, Chronic Oedema and Wound Management
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Specialist knowledge of chronic oedema/ wound management
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the legislative and policy framework underpinning the delivery of an “Out of Hospital” model of care, e.g. Setting the Direction
- Knowledge NICE Guidelines, Audit and Research, Adult Protection and Child Protection policies
- Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Procedures and it’s application in practice
Desirable criteria
- Membership of relevant Special Interest Group
- Community Nurse Prescriber V150
- Knowledge of audit techniques
- Welsh Language Skills (Level 3 and above/B2) are Desirable for this Role.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration clinical experience supported by evidence of ongoing professional development (to include experience in chronic oedema/oncology/community/rehab or equivalent)
- Experience of providing clinical supervision and teaching other disciplines within the clinical field with supporting evidence of involvement in teaching/presentation sessions
- Evidence of assisting in the planning and developing of an existing service.
Desirable criteria
- Participation in staff recruitment process
- Experience of presenting to a range of audiences
- Experience of working within the Primary/Community setting

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
