CTMUHB would like to invite applications for a Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine post.  The post will be based in the Emergency Department of either Prince Charles Hospital, Princess of Wales Hospital or Royal Glamorgan Hospital (the doctor can provide his choice of base during the interview process). 

The level at which the appointee will practice will be determined by their level of experience.

 The post will offer the candidates CV-enhancing opportunities and support for career development, through Life Support courses, Clinical Audit, Grand Round Presentations, Complaints Management, development and/or updating of Care Pathways, support and mentoring of medical students and bedside ultrasound.

Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine.

·           To assess and contribute to the immediate management of new patients, comprising the entire spectrum of emergency presentations

·           To act when necessary, as resuscitation team leader for seriously ill or injured patients, including children, while they are in the Emergency Department

·           To contribute to the supervision and management of clinical shifts as required while on duty, managing the disposition of clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow.

·           To assist with Consultant Review Clinics

·           To support the supervision and training of junior medical staff

To perform minor surgical procedures including manipulation of fractures

 

Main duties of the job

Summary of the Post.

The post has some flexibility in the weekly sessions, but includes 1:5 inclusive weekend cover, with one session per week dedicated to SPA. We welcome candidates who wish to work on a less-than-full-time basis.

 

Provision is made within the rota for candidates to undertake Clinical Audit, personal CPD and teaching. Appropriate advice and support will be given for development towards a career in Emergency Medicine. These posts will be supported by Emergency Medicine consultant staff, whose number include EMUS (Emergency Medicine Ultrasound) Trainers, resuscitation course (ATLS, APLS, ALS) instructors, and Honorary Lecturers in Cardiff University.

 

The post is designed to attract candidates who wish to broaden their clinical experience and to acquire specialist skills in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. The post will also be attractive to doctors who wish to develop their knowledge and skills with a view to the acquisition of specialist certification in EM.

English and or/welsh speakers are both equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties Of the Post

Clinical: Roles & responsibilities include co-operation in the management and treatment of all patients attending the Emergency Department, working autonomously but with supervision provided by the consultant staff.

Contract

The appointment will be in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales).

Other Conditions.

·           The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC prior to taking up the post.

·           Membership of a Medical Defence / Protection society is encouraged but not mandatory.

·           The post is subject to a medical examination and documentation of Hepatitis B Status.

Occasional Emergencies

The doctor accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior.  It has been agreed between the professions and the department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional, and, in particular, that clinical staff should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
