Job overview
The Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board’s Clinical Engineering Department delivers medical equipment management services throughout the UHB.
We currently have a vacancy for a Trainee/Apprentice Band 5 Healthcare Science Practitioner / Clinical Technologist. This role is being offered as a development role, with renumeration as per Annex 21 of the T&Cs. Under Annex 21, the trainee Senior Clinical Technologist will undertake up to a 48 month training/development programme, with an aim to complete a programme of work competencies and gain technical experience in this field This is a training and development role under Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions.
The Clinical Technologist will be required to undertake up to a 48 month training/ development programme upon commencement of this role, with an aim to complete an apprenticeship consisting of college study, and a programme of work competencies to gain technical experience in this field.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a medical technical service that will include the acceptance, test, repair, calibration and preventative maintenance of electrical, electronic, electro-medical, mechano-medical and medical gas equipment mainly at the Prince Charles Hospital and surrounding area.
On occasion there may requirement to travel to other sites within the UHB to assist with workload/schedules or for training purposes.
Will use various health board software packages in the course of their duty, such as recording of jobs for medical equipment, and stock/parts ordering and distribution.
While studying for relevant qualification, Specific training on a range of medical devices will be provided. Computer literacy along with excellent team working and communication skills will be required.
This role does not have directly accessible patient/public contact in line with the service we provide, therefore Welsh language skills are not generally needed for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Annex 21:
Completion of the qualification is a requirement of the contract of employment. During this training period, salary will be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Terms and Conditions as follows :
Months 1 - 12 of the training period will be paid at 60% of the top of Band 5 pay scale,
Months 13 - 24 of the training period will be paid at 65% of the top of Band 5 pay scale.
Months 25 - 36 of the training period will be paid at 70% of the top of Band 5 pay scale.
Months 37 - 48 of the training period will be paid at 75% of the top of Band 5 pay scale.
Upon successful attainment of the identified qualification/experience/competencies, even if sooner than the 48 month allocated timeframe, the post holder will automatically move to the Band 5 as they will then meet the full KSF outline of this role and be expected to undertake all duties within this Job Description as indicated.
NOTE : There will be some circumstances where current staff apply for these posts, and their new trainee salary will be below that of their current salary. To aid both the recruitment and development of staff it is recommended that staff across NHS Wales should have continuity of pay for the duration of the training to avoid financial detriment. This should apply when staff take up training posts both within and across NHS Wales organisations. Following this training, the remuneration will be the bottom of Band 6, again without financial detriment.

Essential criteria
- Good GCSEs in Sciences and maths, Level 2 qualification in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification(s)
- Interest and enthusiasm in electronics/electrical engineering/technologies
- Practical skills for the role
