Job overview

This is a substantive consultant paediatrician post, become available due to reduced sessions within the existing team. This is a traditional consultant post with no contribution to Tier 2 rota. The post-holder would be part of a team of 9 consultants providing paediatric and neonatal care in PCH and 2 community paediatricians. Neonatal experience required to support on-site neonatal services.

Main duties of the job

This is a replacement full time 10 session post offering 8 sessions DCC and 2 SPA sessions. SPA can be increased up to 3 sessions (and DCC proportionately reduced) subject to the post holder taking up departmental lead roles that attract additional SPA.  Part time arrangements will be considered. The post holder will be based at PCH.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide clinical leadership in general paediatrics and Neonatal care in PCH.
  • Provision of supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programme.
  • Participate in clinical governance issues, which include medical audit and research.
  • Participate in the consultant of the week system for general paediatrics at a frequency of 1:8 weeks.
  • Participate in the consultant of the week system for Neonatal unit, 4-5 / year
  • Provide on call off-site Consultant cover 1:9 frequency
  • Contribute to safeguarding rota one day a month

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Full GMC registration • MB, BS or equivalent • MRCPCH or equivalent • Eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview date will be considered. • NLS and APLS/EPLS certified • Experience in paediatric Diabetes
Desirable criteria
  • • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD; PhD; MSc • NLS /APLS/EPLS instructor • SPIN in paediatric Diabetes

Relevant Experience

Essential criteria
  • • At time of interview, the candidate must be on the Specialist Register; or be within 6 months of the anticipated CCT / CESR-CP date, if progress has been satisfactory and it is anticipated that the outcome of the final ARCP will recommend that training will be completed by the time, the recommended CCT / CESR date is reached; or have a primary medical qualification and recognized specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow direct entry onto the Specialist Register. • Prior to taking up the post, the candidate must be on the Specialist Register. • Neonatal experience • Experience in Paediatric Diabetes
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of multi-agency working • Leadership skills. • Experience in other areas relevant to child health e.g. general practice, child mental health, obstetrics, public health • Specialist experience in one or more particular areas of practice to take a lead role in that area.

Ability

Essential criteria
  • • Able to keep good medical notes. • Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions • Good written and oral communication skills • Demonstrate ability to manage time effectively • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team • At least level 3 child protection training • Experience in issues relating to immunizations
Desirable criteria
  • • Demonstrate ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively e.g. report writing, thesis

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • • Participate in research, clinical audit and quality improvement projects
Desirable criteria
  • • Presentation at Regional meetings. • Formal research training • Demonstrate ability to design a research or audit project

Research

Essential criteria
  • • Able to demonstrate an understanding of research methodology

Management

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS. • Understanding of management issues including medical discipline, clinical governance and service planning • Willingness to lead service developments
Desirable criteria
  • • Shows interest and demonstrated ability • Demonstrate ability to manage e.g. project work, mentoring staff

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors. • Willingness to teach medical undergraduates. • Evidence of substantive professional development. • Participation in departmental teaching

  • • Organisation of further training programmes in medical education. • Formal training in teaching methods • Demonstrate ability in teaching and training
