THIS POST IS FIXED TERM FOR UPTO 12 MONTHS DUE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a team of experienced nurses within the Pre-Assessment unit at Prince Charles Hospital. The main role of the post holder will be to review waiting list patients for suitability for various surgeries and provide effective assessment of waiting list patients as part of the overall waiting list management process.
You will be a vital part of the Pre-Assessment team, to support the Pre-Assessment Manager, you will be integral to the governance agenda as well as demonstrating excellent and effective leadership skills. In return, you will be supported by a dedicated and passionate team, and you will be supported in your own professional development.
The ideal candidate is a dedicated and enthusiastic nurse who is commitment to delivering high standards of patient focused care. You will be a dynamic nurse who is flexible and prepared for the high pressure demands of the role. You will be committed to ensuring patients are fully supported and prepared as they undergo various surgical procedures. You will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills.
Main duties of the job
· Review waiting list patients for suitability for surgery
· Provide effective assessment of waiting list patients
· Develop the Pre-assessment nurse role within all specialties
· Provide advice and support to patients requiring elective surgery
Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn’t mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. Details job description includes
- Ability to work as part of a team and have excellent verbal, non verbal and written communication.
- Communicating complex information between the multidisciplinary team there is a key role to liaise, inform and brief others.
- Advising and imparting sometimes sensitive information to patients, relatives and carers is a key job requirement e.g. unsuitability for surgery (hypertension, obesity) the ability to demonstrate empathy is essential.
- Participate in departmental meetings.
- Develop and maintain effective clinical links between the multidisciplinary team.
- Specialist Knowledge and skill to undertake pre-operative assessment of patients requiring surgery.
- Evidence of at least five days study in the past two years
- Significant post-registration experience of which 2 must have been on a surgical ward.
- Desirable-Physical examination skills, ILS Provider, Venepuncture, ECG and skills
- Undertake the specialised pre-operational assessment of patients requiring surgery
- Take baseline observations and analyse against predetermined standards to gauge suitability for surgery
- Take complex medical history’s
- Initiate routine observations and investigations
- Interpretation of often conflicting results
- Refer patients based on history, observations and investigations (For surgery, Anaesthetics, dietetics, back to GP, etc.)
- Plan reassessment clinics
- Initiate routine observations
- Undertake venepunture, cannulation, ECG’s (Not interpretation).
- Physical examination and stethoscopy
- Develop highly specialised advice in ensuring patients are adequately prepared through the preoperative assessment process. For example advice in relation to weight loss, hypertension, other ongoing medical conditions and social circumstances (Type of admission). Within this is an element of discharge planning
- Required to develop policies relevant to own role.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and protocols to enable the development of programmes of care including for pre and post-operative management of surgical patients.
- Supervision of stock management
- Responsible for ensuring physical resources are maintained to a satisfactory standard
- Supervises Band 5’s and other grades
- Assist in the identification and achievement of staff training and development needs includes undertaking performance development reviews
- Participate in training with other team members to develop role.
- Accessing and or inputting data into LHB systems e.g. Myrddin, Electronic pre-assessment system
- Provide accurate, current, comprehensive and concise nursing and medical records.
- Undertake clinical audit twice a year as a minimum
- Provide evidence based care.
- Have an active involvement in any ongoing research and or audit projects
- The post holder is guided by clearly defined protocols
- The post holder is required to be accountable for their own actions, to use own initiative and act independently with discretion to refer patients as appropriate within predefined protocols and procedures for the preoperative assessment of patients. Their workload is managed rather than supervised and act independently whilst undertaking clinical duties.
- The post holder supervises Band 5 nurses and administrative staff.

- Registered nurse, Degree in Nursing, Evidence of at least five days study undertaken in the past two years
