Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum General Surgery Consultant Surgeon with a Colorectal Sub Specialty. 

The successful candidate will join the existing General Surgical Department at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.  The post will have a flexible session programme with a general surgical emergency ‘on call’ commitment 1 in 8.

This post will join the team of Consultants responsible for the provision of general surgical services to Cwm Taf Morgannwg, University Health Board.  The post will be based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital,  Llantrisant, but may also be required to undertake sessions across other sites within the organisation.

This post will be fixed term for up to 6 months due to departmental changes.

Main duties of the job

The consultant will be based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital,  Llantrisant, but may be required to travel to other sites across the organisation.

The post will be required to share with consultant colleagues in the responsibility of providing outpatient and inpatient services for the local population and in doing so, foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical department, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and management teams. 

The post will also work with the Clinical Services Group Management team to: assist in the strategic planning and modernisation of General Surgical services, deliver internal and external targets for patient activity and achieve financial balance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff, ensuring that concise agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions.
  • Undertake ward rounds to identify and assess problems, plan management of care, and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
  • Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and family
  • Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to the maximum potential.
  • Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence based guidelines which are dated, signed and reviewed at least bi-annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.
  • Work with the rest of the consultant team to provide strong professional leadership within the department and be mentored in the delivery of a high quality service provided by well-trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board regarding the treatment of their patients and the appropriate use of the department’s resources.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent FRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree or fellowship

Experience and Training

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients undergoing Surgery Evidence of high level of skill in teaching medical, nursing and other professional colleagues in formal and informal modes
  • Evidence of active and constructive involvement in clinical audit and the implementation of actions to be taken on the basis of audit outcomes
  • Experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures would be essential
  • Previous experience in management of general/emergency surgery including laparoscopic management of benign and malignant colorectal disease.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of active involvement in risk management. Evidence of personal involvement in management and administrative roles in health care

Special Knowledge/Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications in peer reviewed journals or thesis
Desirable criteria
  • Publication in peer-reviewed journals
