Job overview

This new role reflects our commitment to the highest quality of care for all people receiving psychological intervention within the MH&LD care group. CTMUHB has 26 psychiatry trainees at any one time, all of whom are required to complete a short case (10-12 sessions) and  long case (16-20) sessions during Core Training. T

Main duties of the job

The post holder will develop a system of governance that ensures quality of care and good training experience, supporting trainees to develop competences across two modalities. The post holder will be required to develop and implement a series of training sessions to CT1 in addition to providing clinical supervision (1:1 and group) to CT2 and CT3s. The post holder will also support the substantive medical workforce to maintain psychotherapy skills as required.

The post holder will be a member of the MH&LD care group Clinical Training Committee, working closely with the RcPsych College Tutor and RcPsych Psychotherapy Tutor.

Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn’t mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t ‘fluency’, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•    Work closely with the Head of Mental Health Psychology & Psychological Therapies to ensure quality of care for all service users. 
•    Provide supervision and training to core trainees in at least two psychotherapy modalities, holding clinical accountability for psychotherapy provided by core psychiatry trainees. 
•    Work closely with the Medical Director, psychotherapy tutor and college tutor, to co-ordinate and form the Mental Health & Learning Disabilities (MH&LD) psychiatry training committee.

Person specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Doctorate in clinical or counselling psychology, accredited by British Psychological Society
  • Registration as Practitioner Psychologist with Health Care Professions Council
  • Training includes models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Recognised supervision training.
  • Post-doctoral training in relevant specialist areas of Clinical or Counselling Psychology or Psychotherapy.
  • Leadership and / or management training
  • Accreditation in at least one recognised psychotherapy modality.
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies.
  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with medically unexplained symptoms, people with additional disabilities, people with dementia etc.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
Desirable criteria
  • Supervisor’s qualification.
  • Qualification in an additional psychological therapy.
  • Modality specific accredited supervisor.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable experience of working as a practitioner psychologist in relevant settings and services, e.g. secondary care adult mental health, acute or crisis services.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings
  • Experience of Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of representing practitioner psychology in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Experience of Clinical supervision of mental health clinicians.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
Desirable criteria
  • Active involvement and participation in Equality Diversity and Inclusion related issues organisationally and/or clinically
  • Experience working psychotherapeutically with Black and ethnic minority groups
  • Experience of involvement in the planning and delivery of training in psychotherapy modalities

Skills and attributes

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of neuropsychological and psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues
  • Ability to organise time effectively, use own initiative and to work under supervision where appropriate.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh language speaking/listening skills at Level 3 or above
