Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate Clinical Psychologist who is passionate about promoting the wellbeing of children and their families / carers. You will bring creativity, commitment, and a strong understanding of the complex challenges experienced by children with learning disabilities, as well as those who are vulnerable within the care system. The ability to work innovatively and collaboratively with children and families / carers towards co-created goals is essential to this role.

 

This is a split post working across two specialist services:

Child and Adolescent Learning Disabilities Service (CALDS)

Three days a week will be spent within CALDS, which works across Gwent to promote quality of life and psychological understanding of the needs of children and young people with learning disabilities in distress, their families and the often complex systems that support them. The postholder will draw on a range of psychological models (including systemic, DDP and PBS approaches) to create a holistic formulation of need.

My Support Team (MyST)
Two days a week will be spent within MyST, also a Gwent wide service which supports children and young people who are on the edge of care or are looked after by the local authority, along with their families, carers, and professional networks. This part of the role involves working within complex, multi-agency systems to support stability, promote wellbeing, and reduce the need for care placements wherever possible.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in promoting the psychological wellbeing of children and young people with developmental delay or disability, and looked after children, and their families and the systems that support them. The successful candidate will work alongside other members of the team through:

 

1. Provision of high quality psychological information and advice,     dissemination of specialist resources and workshops for families and staff

2.     Co-creation of psychological formulations and clinical plans

3.     Provision of psychological support, reflective practice, consultation and joint working with staff and families

4.     Provision of clinical supervision to therapeutic practitioners

5.     Therapeutic work with children and young people and their families through individual work, family work and therapeutic groups

 

The successful candidate will also engage in clinical supervision to support practice development, conduct and carry out research and audit on the provision of the service.

This post is being advertised as a Band 8a but we invite less experienced applicants to apply with a view to starting on Band 7 and to commit to a plan to develop into the Band 8a role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Honours degree in Psychology giving eligibility for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, accredited by the BPS, or equivalent accredited by the BPS.
Desirable criteria
  • Other related academic qualifications eg. Masters

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Doctorate training across a range of client groups but must include children.
Desirable criteria
  • Post qualification work experience in a relevant clinical or care setting.
