Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) is seeking a dynamic and visionary Head of Analytical Services to lead our analytics function. This is a pivotal role at the heart of transforming how data drives decision-making across the organisation, ensuring high-quality insights to support both operational delivery and strategic ambitions.

Reporting to the Head of Information Management and Analytics and accountable to the Deputy Director of Digital, Data and Technology (Chief Information Officer), you will lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative analytics solutions and embed a data-driven culture across the Health Board.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direction to the Health Board’s analytics teams, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Champion the use of advanced analytics, predictive modelling, and data science to improve patient care, service delivery and strategic planning.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of analytical tools and products to support clinicians, managers, and executives in decision-making.
  • Represent the Digital, Data and Technology Directorate at internal and external forums, including NHS Wales and Welsh Government.
  • Ensure effective use of the NHS Wales National Data Resource (NDR), maximising opportunities from emerging technologies such as the Google Cloud Platform.
  • Lead staff development, creating an environment that supports innovation, learning, and professional growth.

We are looking for an experienced leader with:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent by experience) in a relevant field such as Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Operational Research.
  • Significant experience in leading data analytics and modelling in a healthcare or similarly complex environment.
  • Proven ability to translate complex data into actionable insights that drive change.
  • Expertise in advanced analytical methods and tools (such as SQL, Python, R, or GCP).
  • Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills with a track record of managing high-performing teams.

Welsh language skills are desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters level in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Studies, Data Science, Operational Research, Mathematics, Statistics) or equivalent level of demonstrable knowledge and experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of advanced analytics, mathematical modelling and Operational Research within healthcare settings.
  • Comprehensive understanding of NHS structures, policies, and data system
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of mixed methods evaluation (eg qualitative and quantitative methods).

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in a senior leadership role involving data analytics, modelling, and strategic planning
  • Proven track record of delivering impactful analytical solutions to support organisational decision-making.
  • Experience in designing and implementing training programs to build analytical capabilities
  • Substantial experience working at a senior level involving research, data analysis and data science
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency partnership working with a range of stakeholders.

  • Advanced keyboard skills in data analysis, statistical modelling, discrete, event simulation and programming (e.g., GCP tools, SQL, Python, R).
