Job overview
The advertised post is for a locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine based at the Grange University Hospital near Cwmbran. The successful candidate will have a 2 session fixed-term (2 year) contract contributing to provide direct clinical care on the Intensive Care Unit.
The Critical Care Unit is based at the Grange University Hospital, comprising 24- single-room occupancy beds.
Facilities: Shared office accommodation, secretarial support and IT facilities will be provided.
The posts comprise 2 sessions of DCC (Direct Clinical Care) with no SPA entitlement.
Job share applicants are welcome. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis.
Main duties of the job
As a senior employee of the Health Board the post holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Health Board’s patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-
- To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Board’s service plans
- To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Health Board

Within the Intensive Care Department itself, there are two enthusiastic leads who share local oversight for Wellbeing, and there are also a number of trained and experienced mentors within the department. The department conducts regular (optional) informal meetings, known as ‘Circle’ meetings, incorporating open-ended and supportive peer discussions with colleagues. Expert professional support is also available to all Health Board employees through the Aneurin Bevan Employee Well-Being Service, which is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving psychosocial well-being through the direct support of individuals and the working environments within which they work. Examples of what is available include access to trained counsellors and Psychological Therapy practitioners, as well as organisational systems intended to support doctors and other staff members following a serious incident. Additionally, comprehensive Occupational Health support is available for all employees.
