Job overview
This post will be based across ABUHB sites and is designed to allow the post holder to acquire specialist, advanced Hepatology training as well as supporting the activities of the clinical service within the Gwent Liver Unit with a particular focus on management of advanced liver disease with a focus on admission avoidance and re-admission prevention.
The post-holder will work alongside a variety of Consultant Hepatologists and will be responsible to the Hepatology clinical lead and Gastroenterology clinical director.
This is a one-year post specifically intended for specialist trainees wishing to expand their experience in Hepatology. The role is not ward based and will focus on the provision of high-quality care for patients with advanced liver disease (cirrhosis and its complications and liver cancer). There will be time in the job plan to develop research and /or management experience. Opportunities include training in the management of portal hypertension .
As the candidate will be conducting service endoscopy sessions (i.e. Upper GI endoscopy) independently they will need to have achieved competency in diagnostic upper GI endoscopy.
Main duties of the job
The primary clinical duty of this post is to provide flexible cover for endoscopy lists cancelled by endoscopists as well as support the Hepatology clinical service through attendance at a weekly clinic. The post will therefore include an average of 8 flexible service sessions per week (3 service endoscopy lists, 1 service clinic, 2 sessions for Hot clinic/eLGH in reach, 1.5 admin sessions and 0.5 sessions for MDT work. The remaining 2 sessions will be devoted to quality improvement activity and research/development. There is no ward or on call work as part of this post.
The post-holder will be required to work closely with the directorate management team to assist the smooth running of the Hepatology service which may require vetting of inpatient referrals especially from eLGH sites and support the Junior Clinical Fellow as well as the administration and nursing team. As already alluded to, the post-holder will also be committed to initiating, supervising and conducting a programme of rolling audits as part of the rolling IQILS accreditation.
The successful candidate would be expected to have obtained or obtain a “Good Clinical Practice” (GCP) certification necessary to contribute in research before commencing the post. This is free and organised by the research department.
