Job overview

Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Senior Clinical Fellow in Hepatology within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), offering a unique opportunity to gain advanced specialist training within a high‑performing, forward‑thinking Hepatology service.

Working across ABUHB sites — including the Grange University Hospital and the Royal Gwent Hospital Gastroenterology Ambulatory Care Unit  — you will be part of the Gwent Liver Unit, the only service in Wales to have achieved Level 2 IQILS accreditation.

This non‑ward‑based post provides exceptional exposure to the full pathway of advanced liver disease, cirrhosis complications, liver cancer management and multidisciplinary decision‑making. You will work alongside a dynamic team, contributing to high‑quality patient care with an emphasis on admission avoidance, rapid post‑discharge review, and enhanced outpatient pathways.

The role includes independent service endoscopy lists, attendance and coordination of key MDTs, and participation in quality improvement, research and service development projects. With protected time for personal development, an allocated educational supervisor, and opportunities to gain experience in procedures such as management of portal hypertension, this fellowship is ideally suited to specialist trainees who are passionate about Hepatology and eager to develop their skills in a supportive, innovative environment.

Main duties of the job

This post provides flexible clinical cover for cancelled endoscopy lists and supports the Hepatology service through a weekly clinic. The role includes approximately 8 service sessions per week, comprising endoscopy lists, a hepatology clinic, Hot Clinic/eLGH in‑reach, admin time and MDT activity. Two additional sessions are allocated to quality improvement, audit and research, including work towards IQILS accreditation.

The post-holder will work closely with the Hepatology management, nursing and admin teams, support vetting of inpatient referrals (including eLGH sites), and contribute to supervising the Junior Clinical Fellow.

Applicants will be expected to hold (or obtain before starting) Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification, provided free via the Research Department.

There is no on-call or ward commitment, although experienced candidates may have the opportunity to buddy with the consultant GI bleed rota at GUH on a discretionary basis
