Job overview

Applications are invited to join our dynamic team for the posts of Medical Laboratory Assistants, these posts will be based at the The Grange University Hospital but will include rotation to the Nevill Hall and Royal Gwent Hospital as and when required.

These posts will be based in the Pre-Analytical area of Pathology where we cover a 24/7 service 365 days per year.

These are demanding but interesting posts in busy laboratories with a wide variety of duties including data entry, sample sorting and labelling, dealing with the public, and dealing with telephone enquiries from doctors, nurses and patients. In addition some pre-analytical technical duties are required such as sample centrifuging and other preparatory work. Full training will be provided for these and for other duties that may be included although previous experience would be beneficial. As a minimum, candidates should be computer literate, have a good standard of education and have effective communication skills. Computer/typing related qualifications will be an advantage, as will an enthusiastic approach and any relevant experience.

Hours: 2pm – 8pm Monday - Friday 

Main duties of the job

The Pre-Analytical dept prepares samples for the Haematology and Biochemistry departments.

There is a large open lab with a large team consisting of Biomedical Scientists working along side support staff.

Receipt, sorting and registering pathology samples.

Computer literate, attention to detail and team work required.

Prepares clinical specimens for biological testing.

Perform such functions, including sample handling and clerical duties as are necessary to ensure the efficient running of the Department.

Work will also include data input into departmental computer systems, report filing and response to telephone enquiries.

Receive, sort and distribute samples to the appropriate laboratory or section.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
