Job overview
Main duties of the job
· To act as a specialist clinician for clients with complex swallowing and/or speech, language and communication needs in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Speech and Language Therapy Service to ensure the provision of high quality service.
· To provide specialist assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment and advice for all clients with a wide range of swallowing and/or communication difficulties in the hospitals with specialist responsibility for clients within a specialist area of speech and language therapy.

You will be based at the Grange University Hospital but may be required to travel across sites to manage clinical demands and risk; therefore, access to a vehicle is required.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Speech and Language Therapy Degree. Registered with HCPC. Member of RCSLT Knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools for client group. Knowledge of specific assessment/treatment tools for clients with complex needs. Knowledge of clinical governance issues. Knowledge of national policies in Health and Social Care.
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate training in teaching others. Post graduate training in working with multidisciplinary and multiagency team. Some Research methodology/clinical audit training. Excellent knowledge of national policies in Health and Social Care. Excellent knowledge of validity and reliability of assessment tools. Reflective practice theory.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post graduate experience in speciality services. Experience of performing and analysing highly complex assessments. Experience of working with support workers/technical instructors, multidisciplinary colleagues.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with clients in a variety of settings and across agencies. Experience of running support and therapy groups for patients and/or carers. Experience of partnership working with other agencies. Experience of contributing to policy documents.
Aptitude and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Highly developed presentation skills. Highly developed auditory discrimination and perceptual skills. Excellent and sensitive interpersonal skills including observation, listening, counselling and empathy skills with people with disordered communication skills. Able to analyse complex assessment information for complex cases and make specialist clinical decisions. Good negotiation skills and management of conflict. Critical appraisal skills.
Desirable criteria
- Skills in analysing and communicating highly complex assessment information. Experience of teaching/training others. Experience of organising joint /SLT-led therapy. Excellent auditory discrimination skills and expert ability to transcribe phonetically and analyse. Excellent ability to generate solutions in situations of conflict. Ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn.
