Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a motivated professional who is passionate about Health Protection to join our team. The local Health Protection team works across five local authority areas and sits within the wider Gwent Public Health team. As a Public Health Practitioner, you will work in collaboration with a range of teams and services to deliver our objectives. 

The post holder must be able to demonstrate their ability to work in partnership with other agencies and be able to manage conflicting perspectives. Key working relationships (internal and external) include fellow Health Protection and Public Health team members, other ABUHB departments (including Emergency Planning, Infection Prevention and Control), Public Health Wales, other Health Boards, Local Authorities and Social Care Providers. There may be times when the post holder will be expected to work with, engage and/or communicate with members of the public.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the delivery of health protection programmes and responses across various areas, settings and target groups aligned with local priorities and contributing to the Gwent Public Health Team’s vision of a healthier, fairer, safer and stronger Gwent.

The post holder will contribute to programmes including:

- Sexual health (e.g., STIs, C-card scheme, cervical screening, HPV vaccination promotion), requiring collaboration with clinical teams, project management and reporting to senior management.

-      National elimination programmes for blood-borne viruses (Hepatitis B & C, HIV) and tuberculosis

-      Vaccination equity initiatives

-      Screening of high-risk populations

The role will focus on defined areas but may be required to support a range of health protection issues based on service needs. You will be expected to support any acute response to a public health incident in line with national policies and guidance. Including:

-       Supporting responses to public health incidents in collaboration with the Health Protection Clinical Response team

-      Support the identification, prevention, control and relevant response to infectious and non-infectious threats to the population of Gwent

Establishing situational awareness, supporting the mobilising of vaccinations and testing in partnership with relevant teams, supporting contact tracing if required, engagement with relevant stakeholders

Qualification and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, or equivalent demonstratable experience
  • Registered Nurse
  • Registered with a UK statutory heath regulator (e.g., HCPC)
  • Demonstrate the ability to register with the UK Public Health Register on commencement of employment
  • Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) Certificate of Registration
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Management or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of the main principles underpinning infectious disease, infection prevention and control, and vaccination and immunisation
  • Knowledge of the determinants of health and public health programmes.
  • Knowledge of the needs of different populations and sensitivity to cultural backgrounds.
  • Understanding of evidence-based practice and related practical application.
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised infection prevention and control qualification to post grad diploma level.
  • Recognised teaching and training qualification
  • Registered with UKPHR.
  • Understanding of the importance of effective stakeholder collaboration.
  • Understanding of health protection issues and practices.
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Management or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the field of health protection, public health, nursing, , healthcare, environmental health or other demonstrable experience relevant to the post.
  • Experience of working with a range of partner organisations relevant to public health.
  • Experience of prioritising and managing own workload to meet the demands of the service
  • Experience of dealing with sensitive or difficult situations.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in either infectious diseases or infection prevention and control.
  • Teaching/training experience
  • Line management experience
  • Experience in research and audit.
